Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
AUGUST 11, 2005, 11:00 a.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (56-61) vs. Tucson (58-59)
HOME: 24-29 (39-33 in â04) AWAY: 32-32 (32-40 in '04) vs. Tucson: 2-0 (4-0 in '04)
TODAY: The Royals and Tucson finish a game suspended by rain last night, followed by a seven-inning contest. Omaha leads the series 2-0 and is 5-1 on the home stand. Air-time is 10:40 a.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: A heavy thunderstorm suspended the game with two away in the top of the 2nd inning, immediately after Andy Green knocked in Tucson's third run off Ryan Jensen with an RBI single. Royals lefty Chris George (7-7, 5.74) is slated to take the mound for the Royals for the completion of the suspended game. Righty Edger Gonzalez (8-4, 4.86) is to take over for Tucson starter Brandon Lyon in the bottom of the 2nd.
ROYALS REPORT: The Royals have won a season-high four straight games at home. A victory in the completion of the suspended game would match Omaha's longest overall winning streak of the campaign and would make the Royals 7-0 vs the Sidewinders over the past two years. The Royals have won eleven of their last 13 games, with three of those contests decided by a single run. *** Dennis Tankersley has posted a 2.81 ERA (5 ER in 16.0 IP) over his last three starts, going 1-0. *** Santiago Ramirez' eleven saves have all come in his last 21 appearances. He's sporting a 2.92 and 1-0 record over that span. *** Ho-hum: just another 2-for-4 night for Matt Diaz Tuesday. The Royals left fielder has hit in seven straight games (.448, 13-29, 3 HR, 9 RBI) and in 16 of his last 17 tilts (.527, 39-74, 5 HR, 20 RBI). *** Huber, who was 3-for-his-first-21 (.143) after his promotion from Wichita, had gone 7-for-his-past-19 (.368), jumping his average with Omaha up to .250. *** Truby is on a five-game hitting streak, going 6-for-19 (.316) with three homers and six RBI. *** Even though he struck out in all three trips to the plate Tuesday night, snapping a five-game hit string, Calvin Pickering is still hitting .321 (35-109) over his last 29 contests, with nine home runs and 32 RBI over that stretch. *** Adrian Brown is hitting at a .435 clip (10-23) on the home stand. He has two homers, five RBI and seven runs scored in the six games. That follows an 0-for-18 series at Tacoma. *** New Omaha catcher Jared Price made his Triple-A debut Tuesday, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, but handling Guiel's skipping throw to the plate on the decisive defensive play in the 7th inning. *** Aaron Guiel struck out twice Tuesday night, giving him nine K's in his last 18 at-bats. Guiel is hitting .200 (7-35) over his last eight games, although he was scored eight runs.
STARTERS: LH Bill Murphy (6-5, 4.25) vs. LH J.P. Howell (3-1, 4.29) Howell makes his 5th start for Omaha. The 22-year old lefty got the win in his last start, a 6-4 victory last Saturday vs. Las Vegas (5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K). Howell joined Omaha July 26, after being optioned by KC, where he went 1-4 with a 7.68 ERA over his first eight big league starts. Howell began the year at High Desert, making eight starts and going 3-1 with a sparkling 1.96 ERA and 48 K's in 46.0 innings. He was promoted to Wichita, where he was 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts, striking out 23 in 18.0 frames. In 2004, Howell was KC's sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds of the June draft (31st overall) out of the University of Texas. He began his pro career at Idaho Falls, appearing in six games (four starts) and going 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA. Howell was a finalist for the 2004 Roger Clemens Award, given to the top college pitcher, and was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year. He went 15-2 with a 2.13 ERA as a senior and recorded 166 strikeouts in 135.1 innings. He notched 271 K's in his two years at Texas, breaking Clemens' two-season record of 241.
