TODAY'S MATCHUPS
GAME ONE:
RH Dustin Nippert (5-2, 4.47) vs. LH Dusty Hughes (1-0, 0.00) GAME TWO:
TBA vs. RH Brandon Duckworth (3-6, 4.78)
YESTERDAY: The RedHawks and Royals split their day night doubleheader, with Omaha winning game one 6-1 and Oklahoma taking game two 9-4. The RedHawks were held to just a pair of base hits in the first game, with Shane Costa, Jason Smith and Ryan Shealy providing the offense. Brian Gordon took the loss in his first professional start. Oklahoma plated seven runs in the top of the first innings in the nightcap of the split doubleheader, including four on a grand slam by John Mayberry. Matt Harrison earned his third win at Triple-A this season, pitching five solid innings.
MADRIGAL TO THE MAJORS: Warner Madrigal was recalled by Texas yesterday, filling a spot on the Rangers pitching staff created when Kason Gabbard went on the disabled list. Madrigal went 1-0 with 14 saves and an ERA 3.00 over 36 innings combined at Double-A and Triple-A this year. The right-hander struck out 43 batters and walked 16. Madrigal had converted four of five save opportunities with Oklahoma, and recorded a 3.98 earned run average in 17 appearances.
STREAKS SNAPPED:
Nelson Cruz saw his hitting streak stopped at 15 games with an 0-3 performance in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Cruz also had a 25 game on-base streak dating back to May 28 (at Omaha) broken as well. The hitting streak matches Taylor Teagarden's May string as the longest by any RedHawk this season, and Cruz's on-base streak duplicated Chris Davis' team high as the longest on-base streak by any RedHawk in 2008.
PUFFER PROMOTED:
Brandon Puffer was promoted from Frisco to Oklahoma yesterday afternoon. The right-hander was 6-0 in 26 appearances for the RoughRiders this season with an ERA of 3.07. Puffer was holding opposing batters to a .267 average this year and had stuck out 35 over 44 innings. Originally drafted by Minnesota in the 27th round in the 1994 draft... Has pitched for Houston, San Diego, and San Francisco in the Major Leagues, with a 3-4 record and an ERA of 5.09 over 85 games.
STRANGE DAYS:
The RedHawks and Royals will meet in their third doubleheader of the season today. The first doubleheader was caused by a chemical spill, but the second game that day was postponed, forcing a doubledip a day later. One doubleheader was planned for this trip, but Friday's power outage has forced these back-to-back doubleheaders.
OMAHA AT A GLANCE:
The Royals extended their winning streak to seven games with the game one victory yesterday, but saw the streak stopped in game two. The seven game winning streak was the longest by Omaha this season, and followed a five-game losing streak from June 14 through June 18... Omaha is tied with Fresno with the league's best fielding percentage (.981) and has turned a league-high 98 double plays.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:
Texas lost 8-6 to Philadelphia... Frisco was doubled up by Springfield 10-5... Bakersfield beat Visalia 8-5... Clinton blanked Quad Cities 10-0... Spokane slipped past Tri-City 7-5.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
The RedHawks are 4-4 on doubleheader days this season, having lost both against Sacramento on May 8, swept at Omaha on May 30, and have split the last two day-night doubleheaders against New Orleans and Omaha, respectively... RedHawks pitchers have walked a league-low 229 batters, 20 less than Round Rock, second on the list with 249.
ON THE AIR:
Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand. Fox Sports Radio AM 1340 in Oklahoma City will serve as the flagship station in 2008.
