Oklahoma City Comets News Release
LAST GAME: Oklahoma and Omaha combined to hit five home runs in Monday's afternoon's 7-5 RedHawks win. Four of the five Royals runs scored courtesy of home runs, while all seven of the RedHawks runs crossed on home runs. The final home run was the most important to Oklahoma, erasing a two-run deficit in the eighth inning and giving the RedHawks a two-run lead they would not relinquish. Ryan Roberts singled to lead off the inning, Nelson Cruz and Jason Botts walked, and Chris Davis hit his first Triple-A grand slam to clear the bases. Kea Kometani was the benefactor and earned the win, and Wes Littleton pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the season. Oklahoma snapped a two game slide with the victory.
SECOND SLAM:
Chris Davis hit Oklahoma's second grand slam this season in yesterday afternoon's win. Jason Ellison had the RedHawks first on April 17, a seventh inning shot in Oklahoma's 19-3 win over Round Rock. Davis hit six grand slams last season while with Bakersfield.
THREE STRAIGHT:
Nelson Cruz has hit home runs in three straight games, marking the first time this season a RedHawk has accomplished this feat. Cruz hit a solo home run during the sixth inning Saturday, hit a solo shot in the sixth inning Sunday, and launched a two-run shot yesterday afternoon. Nate Gold was the last RedHawk to hit home runs in three straight games near the tail end of last season, hitting home runs in back to back games at New Orleans on August 20 and 21, and then in the first game of series at Nashville on August 22.
GABBARD'S DEBUT:
Kason Gabbard allowed five earned runs in his RedHawks debut over seven full innings. Four of the runs were tallied between two home runs, a solo shot by Mitch Maier and a three-run home run by Damon Hollins. Gabbard struck out seven, walked a pair, and left the game with the score 5-3 in favor of Omaha.
TWO ON THE SPOT:
Both clubs will use spot starters for tonight's series finale. Steve Rowe is making his fourth start of the season, while Ramon Colon is making his first. Rowe has excelled over his three previous starts, allowing four runs, two of which have been earned over 11 innings for an earned run average of 1.64. Rowe's ERA as a reliever is 4.50 with seven earned runs allowed over 14 innings. Oklahoma is 0-3 in Rowe's previous three starts this year, losing by three runs combined (5-4 @ POR, 7-6 vs. FRE, & 1-0 @ MEM)
HITLESS DROUGHT:
Taylor Teagarden is hitless in his last 21 at bats. Teagarden's last hit was a single in the second inning of the RedHawks 6-4 loss on May 26 at Iowa. The base hit extended Teagarden's hitting streak to 15 games at the time, but has been held off the bases in all but two plate appearances since. The RedHawks catcher walked once on May 27 and once yesterday.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:
Texas fell 13-9 to Cleveland... Frisco lost 3-1 to Northwest Arkansas... Bakersfield rallied for a 10-8 win over Stockton... Clinton beat Burlington 9-7 in a rain-shortened, seven inning game.
