Last Night: Oklahoma beat Memphis 7-1 last night in large part to the effort on the mound by starter Doug Mathis. The RedHawks starter allowed one run on five hits while striking out four. Ryan Roberts's first home run of the season started the offensive roll in the third inning, and the night was capped by Chris Shelton's three-run home run in the fifth.
SIX SHY: RedHawks skipper Bobby Jones is now six wins shy of 500 in his Oklahoma City managerial career. Jones spent two seasons at the helm of the 89ers in the mid-ninties, and is in his second stint as the manager of the RedHawks.
BACK-TO-BACK: Chris Shelton became the first RedHawk to hit home runs in consecutive games this season. Kevin West hit home runs on back-to-back nights at the tail end of last season, turning the trick in Albuquerque on September 1st and 2nd. Shelton also leads the league with seven runs batted in, and would be tied for the league lead in slugging percentage if he had enough bats to qualify.
A QUALITY START: Speaking of league leaders, Doug Mathis leads the PCL in innings pitched after going eight strong frames last night. Former RedHawk R.A. Dickey, now pitching for Tacoma, and Portland's Joshua Greer each pitched seven innings in their first starts of the 2008 campaign. Tacoma lost Dickey's first start, falling 5-1 to Sacramento, while Greer lead Portland to an 8-4 win over Fresno.
WELCOME BACK, OLD FRIEND: John Wasdin makes his first start in the Cardinals organization today. Wasdin has spent time in the Majors with Oakland, Boston, Colorado, Baltimore, Toronto, Texas, and Pittsburgh, as well as spending one season in Japan. The right-hander pitched in parts of three seasons for Oklahoma, winning 19 games in 44 appearances, including 34 starts. Wasdin and Sidney Ponson, his mound counterpart this afternoon, were teammates in Baltimore for the majority of the 2001 season. Ponson started 23 games, while Wasdin pitched 26 games in relief.
Statistical Change: Upon further review of the error charged to Ryan Roberts, it was determined that all four runs scored in the first inning on Friday evening will be accounted as earned runs to RedHawks starter A.J. Murray, raising his ERA from 0.00 to 9.00.
Memphis AT A GLANCE: Colby Rasmus extended his hitting streak to three games with a two-out single in the third inning last night... Joe Mather is the lone Redbird among the League Leaders, tied with two others for second in runs scored with five.
Around the Organization: Texas dropped a 2-1 decision to the LA Angels... Frisco beat Springfield 7-4... Bakersfield lost to San Jose 4-3... Clinton edged Cedar Rapids 1-0.
DOT-DOT-DOT: Nelson Cruz makes his 2008 season debut this afternoon... RH Luis Mendoza will make a rehab start tomorrow for Oklahoma. Mendoza is currently on the Rangers' 15-Day Disabled List with a blister on his right-middle finger... Today's game is a 4:05 start due to the Jeremy Camp post-game concert.
ON THE AIR: Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand. Fox Sports Radio AM 1340 in Oklahoma City will serve as the flagship station in 2008. The network affiliates this season are KSIW 1450 AM in Woodward, KXCA 1380 AM in Lawton, KPNS 1350 AM in Duncan, KTJS 1420 AM in Hobart, KGFF 1450 AM in Shawnee, and KWSH 1260 AM in Wewoka. Each game will also be broadcast on the internet through the audio link at www.oklahomaredhawks.com.
