Sidewinders Surrender Lead In Ninth To Lose 7-5

Tucson, AZ-The Sidewinders were unable to hold a 1-run 9th inning lead in their second consecutive loss to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Friday 7-5.

Colorado Springs started quickly, scoring two runs in the first. The Sky Sox have scored in the first inning in there first three games. Sky Sox got on to the board because of an Ian Stewart double off of Sidewinders starter Juan Gutierrez, which scored Seth Smith from first. Stewart advanced to third because of a Don Kelly throwing error to home. Humberto Cota came up hit a ball past third baseman Jesus Merchan to bring in Stewart.

Sidewinders came back and tied the game in the third when Don Kelly hit a solo home run to center on a 2-1 for his first home run of the season. The Sidewinders got back on the board from back-to-back doubles by Trot Nixon and Josh Whitesell.

The Sidewinders took the lead going into the bottom of the sixth, when Tim Raines Jr. singled to right field scoring Wilkin Castillo from third and moving Merchan into scoring position. Pinch hitter Phil Avlas came in for Gutierrez and delivered a RBI single to put the Sidewinder up 4-2.

After the two-run first inning Gutierrez calmed down and pitched five straight scoreless innings for the Sidewinders. Dustin Glant replaced him and gave up one run to Cory Sullivan line drive that scored Doug Bernier cutting the Sidewinders lead to one.

Sidewinders closer Jailen Peguero entered in the 9th but allowed four runs on three hits and three walks to blow the save opportunity. Tucson posted a run in the bottom of the frame but fell short in the 7-5 loss.

Tucson Sidewinders fell to 1-2 to this season leaving them second in the Pacific Southern behind Sacramento whose game was postponed due to rain.

The Sidewinders will face the Sky Sox in the final game of the series starting at 1:30 PM on Sunday afternoon. RHP Matt Green (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Jose Capellan (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Sky Sox. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 1:15 p.m.
