Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITY (April 5, 2008) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim activated right-handed pitcher Scot Shields from the 15-day disabled list today. To make room on the 25-man roster, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Rich Thompson to the Bees. These announcements were made by Angels General Manager Tony Reagins.
Shields, 32, was placed on the disabled list, March 29 (retroactive to March 21), due to tightness in his right forearm. This marked the first time he has been on the DL in his career. Shields made one rehabilitation appearance for Salt Lake on April 3, pitching one inning of relief (2 H, 3 SO). Shields registered a 4-5 record with two saves and a 3.86 ERA (77 IP - 33 ER) in 71 appearances for the Angels in 2007. He led the AL for the second straight season with 31 holds. His 35 wins in relief are the most by an Angels' reliever in club history.
Thompson, 23, was 0-0 with a 45.00 ERA (1 IP - 5 ER) in one appearance for the Angels this season. He owns a lifetime 0-0 record and 15.26 (7.1 IP, 14 H, 13 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 5 BB, 9 SO, 3 WP) in eight appearances. In 15 games for the Bees in 2007, Thompson posted a 3-0 record and 2.28 ERA. A native of Hornsby, Australia, Thompson signed with the Angels as a free agent on February 13, 2002.
The Salt Lake Bees will open at home against the Portland Beavers on April 11 at 6:35 p.m. (MT). For more information about Bees season tickets, which start as low as $7 per game, please call 325-BEES.
