Oklahoma City Comets News Release
TODAY:
The RedHawks look to snap a season-long 3-game losing streak with a series opener against the Albuquerque Isotopes at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks remain a half-game back of Albuquerque and New Orleans in the American South Division despite dropping to a season-low 4 games under .500. The entire division is separated by a half-game. Righthander Elizardo Ramirez will oppose the Isotopes' Giancarlo Alvarado in the first of 16 scheduled meetings between these clubs this year.
LEADS NOT SAFE ON SUNDAY:
Oklahoma City lost a pair of 3-run leads and New Orleans failed to hold a ninth-inning lead in Sunday's 12-8 Zephyrs win in 10 innings at The Brick. The Z's took 3 out of 4 in the series. New Orleans leaves town having scored 35 runs on 54 hits in 4 games. Second baseman Chris Coghlan capped a series in which he went 10-for-16 with 5 walks (.714 OBP) with a 3-run homer in the 10th off Pedro Strop (1-1) to put the Zephyrs back in front at 11-8. Gaby Sanchez followed with a homer to complete the scoring. Kevin Richardson extended the game with an RBI single in the ninth to tie it 8-8 after Strop allowed a pair of ninth-inning runs to fall behind.
MORE MOVES:
Reliever Thomas Diamond was placed on OKC's DL today with a right shoulder strain and lefthander A.J. Murray was promoted from Frisco. Murray started the season in extended spring before appearing in 6 games for the RoughRiders, going 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA. Infielder Jose Vallejo was promoted from Class AA Frisco yesterday. The winner of the Rangers' inaugural Minor League Defender of the Year award in 2008, Vallejo is in Triple-A for the first time. The switch-hitting 22-year-old was batting .289 with 10 RBIs in 20 games for Frisco, 19 at second base and 1 as DH. Vallejo went 1-for-4 with a walk yesterday in his RedHawks debut.
VAUGHAN'S STREAK ENDS:
Reliever Beau Vaughan saw his 14.1-inning scoreless streak end yesterday when he allowed 2 runs in the eighth. Vaughan had gone the length of the season (his first 8 appearances) without allowing a run.
FOUR GAMES DOWN:
Yesterday's loss dipped the RedHawks to 4 games below .500 for the first time this year. OKC has not been above .500, but has led the division or been within a half-game of first every day since April 17.
MEET THE PARENTS: Like previous opponent New Orleans, Albuquerque changed parent clubs in the off season, switching from Florida to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Albuquerque/Calgary franchise had been affiliated with the Marlins since 1999. Albuquerque has a long history with the Dodgers, as the Albuquerque Dukes, which moved to Portland in 2001, were the Dodgers' PCL affiliate from 1972-2000.
TWILIGHT TIME: OKC is 1-2 this season at home in 4:05 games.
DOT...DOT...DOT:
OKC has gone 8 games without hitting a home run. The RedHawks' last homer was a 3-run shot by German Duran on April 23 against Omaha at The Brick...OKC's 10 homers are the fewest in the league...RedHawks pitching had allowed just 6 home runs entering the New Orleans series, none more than a 2-run shot, but surrendered 6 in the 4-game series...The Zephyrs had four 3-run homers in the set...The RedHawks have allowed the second-fewest homers in the league...only Memphis (7) has allowed fewer...Duran is currently day-to-day with a high ankle sprain sustained on Saturday....Brandon Boggs and Esteban German are riding 5-game hitting and on-base streaks...Casey Benjamin has reached base in 5 straight dating to April 19.
ON THE AIR:
KTOK AM 1000 is the RedHawks' new flagship radio station, airing nearly 100 games. Day games will primarily air on sister station Fox Sports Radio 1340 AM. Between the two outlets all 144 games will be broadcast live. Affiliates around Oklahoma will again offer fans outside the OKC metro area the chance to listen to the RedHawks.
