Portland Beavers News Release
RENO, Nev. - Alex Romero went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Josh Whitesell collected two hits, including a three-run homer, and four RBIs as the Reno Aces defeated the Portland Beavers 16-5 Saturday afternoon at Aces Ballpark.
Rusty Ryal tallied three hits and Trent Oeltjen added two hits and three RBIs for the Aces (10-12), who collected eight extra-base hits on the day. Reno's catcher John Hester and starting pitcher Billy Buckner also had two hits.
Josh Alley had two RBIs and Drew Macias tallied two hits for the Beavers (11-12), who fell to 1-6 on their current eight-game road trip.
Josh Ellis (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Aces to pick up his third win of the year.
Matt Buschmann (1-3) gave up 10 runs on 10 hits and a walk over two innings to suffer his third straight loss for the Beavers, who have allowed 12 or more hits in four straight games.
Buckner gave up five runs (3 earned) on five hits and six walks but lasted just four innings, preventing him from earning the victory.
The Aces jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first two innings. Oeltjen's two-run double capped a three-run first inning, but the Aces did much of their damage in the second, sending 10 men to the plate while posting a seven-run inning. Reno pounded out six hits, including two triples, in the frame and Hester's two-run double highlighted the inning for the Aces, who set a franchise record for runs in the inning.
The Beavers got one back in the third when Buschmann tripled and scored, but the Aces tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the inning on Romero's two-run single, extending their lead to 12-1 after three.
Portland put a dent in the deficit, batting around in the top of the fifth while scoring four runs to chase Buckner. The Beavers used five singles and a costly error by the shortstop Ryal to cut the Aces' lead to 12-5, but left the bases loaded in the frame.
Whitesell connected on a three-run shot off Beavers infielder Craig Stansberry in the seventh and Agustin Murillo scored on a Chris Roberson groundout in the eighth to cap the scoring.
The Beavers and Aces play the finale of their four-game series in Reno Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. (Pacific).
