Oilers Acquire Garrett Stafford from Washington for Dane Byers

Oklahoma City - The Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Garrett Stafford from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Dane Byers.

Stafford, a 6-0, 186-pounder from Los Angeles, Calif. was skating with the Capitals' American Hockey League affiliate in Hershey. In 48 games with the Bears, he scored 21 points (1-20-21).

In his 10th full season as a pro, Stafford has played in 665 games, with 658 coming at the American Hockey League level with Cleveland, Worcester, Grand Rapids, Texas, San Antonio, Hamilton and Hershey. In 658 AHL games, he has recorded 366 points (93-273-366) and served 508 penalty minutes. He's registered two assists in seven NHL games with Detroit, Phoenix and Dallas.

During the 2003-04 season, his first season as a pro, he played 73 games with the Cleveland Barons and scored 46 points (12-34-46). That earned him Second Team AHL All Star honors and a spot on the AHL All Rookie team. We was a key member of the Texas Stars during their run to the Calder Cup Finals in 2010. Prior to turning pro, he played four seasons with the University of New Hampshire. With the Wildcats, he appeared in 134 games over four seasons and scored 81 points (14-67-81). During the 2001-02 season, he was selected to the Hockey East All Tournament Team. That same season, the Wildcats played for the NCAA National Championship.

Before playing with the University of New Hampshire, Stafford played three seasons with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League. During his three seasons with the Buccaneers, he played 146 games and scored 75 points (15-60-75).

Byers, a 6-3, 204-pounder from Nipawin, Saskatchewan, signed with the Oilers during the offseason. He appeared in 58 games with Oklahoma City, scored 10 points (6-4-10) and served 144 penalty minutes.

The Barons return to action Tuesday, April 3 at home against the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Later in the week, the Barons play three games over a three-night period. Friday night, they travel to Cedar Park Texas to take on the Texas Stars.

Saturday, April 6, the Barons return home to face the Chicago Wolves at 7 p.m. The Barons are giving away TWO Ford Fiestas in their Drive Away Every Saturday promotion. The weekend concludes Sunday, April 7 against Chicago at 4 p.m. Following the game, the Barons invite fans to stay after the game to skate with members of the team. Skate rental is free with a ticket to the game.
