The Edmonton Oil Kings would score four times in the first 25 minutes and spoil the home debut of Portland Winter Hawks Head Coach Mike Johnston, defeating the Hawks by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
The Oil Kings got three goals from defenseman as Tyler Hlookoff, Mark Pysyk and Adrian Van de Mosselaer all converted from the point. Logan Proulx and Brett Breitkreuz also added markers for Edmonton, with Breitkreuz scoring into the empty net.
Brent Raedeke had two assists for Edmonton.
Portland got goals from Taylor Peters, his second of the season, set up by Tayler Jordan and Brock Cornish late in the first period, and Stefan Schneider, his first career WHL goal, set up by Travis Bobbee in the third period.
Cam Lanigan made 27 saves on 29 shots to get the win for Edmonton while Kurtis Mucha made 25 saves on 29 shots in net for Portland.
On special teams, Edmonton finished 1 for 4 on the power play while Portland went 0 for 3.
Next up, the Hawks will start a three game in three night stretch in Spokane on Friday night at 7:00 before returning home to take on the Red Deer Rebels at 7:00 on Saturday night and the Kamloops Blazers at 5:00 on Sunday night. Both home games are in the Memorial Coliseum and tickets are available at 503-236-HAWK or at any Ticketmaster location.
