Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

The Edmonton Oil Kings went down early on the road against the Kelowna Rockets on Friday night and just couldn't claw their way back into the game, despite outshooting their opponents 30-25.

Edmonton (8-13-3-0) gave up two goals in each period as Kelowna (16-5-1-0) powered their way to a 6-1 victory at Prospera Place.

The Rockets took control early when Tyson Baillie scored 1:43 into the opening frame. The Oil Kings would tie it up just minutes later on a goal from Luke Bertolucci, but that would be the last of Edmonton's offence as Kelowna proceeded to take a stranglehold on the game.

The lone tally was Bertolucci's 3rd goal and 6th point of the season, while Dario Meyer picked up the assist for his 8th point.

Rockets forward and Czech Republic native Tomas Soustal racked up 2 goals on the night, including a nifty lacrosse-style tally when he scooped up the puck with his blade behind the net and tucked it over the shoulder of Oil Kings goalie Payton Lee to make it 3-1 at 1:38 of the 2nd period.

Kelowna also got goals from Southam, Stephens and Coughlin en route to the dominant 6-1 victory. Stephens' tally at 12:48 of the 2nd saw Oil Kings goaltender Lee chased from the net after giving up 4 goals on 12 shots.

Patrick Dea came in for the Oil Kings and give up 2 more goals on 13 shots as Edmonton struggled to keep the puck out of their net against the defending WHL champs. On the other end, Rockets goalie Michael Herringer was solid, making 29 stops on the 30 shots the Oil Kings sent his way. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the man advantage.

The Oil Kings hope to bounce back as they continue their B.C. road swing with a stop in Kamloops to take on the Blazers (9-8-3-0) on Saturday night.
