Portland, OR- The Portland Winterhawks (11-9-0-0, 22 pts) scored three goals in the first period and never looked back, defeating the Tri-City Americans (8-13-1-0, 17 pts) 5-2 in front of 4,384 fans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Friday Night.
Portland scored on the power play early in the first. Jack Dougerty fired a shot through traffic into the net for a 1-0 Winterhawks lead. Four minutes later, the Winterhawks lead was pushed to 2-0. Colton Veloso fired a shot from the right faceoff circle that lit the red lamp. Tri-City fought back, cutting the lead to 2-1 midway through the period. The Winterhawks pushed the lead back to two goals less than two minutes later, as Alex Overhardt fired a wrist shot from the slot into twine for a 3-1 lead after the first period.
Early in the second period, Portland extended the lead to 4-1 as Dominic Turgeon skated to the front of the net and stuffed the puck into the goal. The Americans answered with a goal of their own, as Beau McCue fired a shot from the blue line, with a screen helping the puck find the back of the net. Late in the second, Paul Bittner fired a shot from the right faceoff circle short side into the net on the power play for a 5-2 lead after two periods.
