Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB -- The Everett Silvertips don't allow many goals, nor do they score many and Friday night showed the Tigers faithful why that was. The 'Tips ranked first in goals against in the WHL and had the best goalie in the WHL statistically wise in the net making it difficult for the orange and black to find the net on this night.

The opening frame was a defensive juggernaut with not much room to move and very tight checking. The Tigers rolled all four lines early, deciding to dress 7 defense in light of a 3 game suspension to Alex Mowbray. Steven Owre had the biggest chance of the frame as he was found in the high slot but just shot the puck high and wide on Tips goalie Carter Hart. Medicine Hat would find themselves trailing just before the intermission as Riley Sutter potted his first career WHL goal on a power play to put the visitors up 1-0 after 20 minutes.

If the Tigers were to get back into the game in the middle frame it would take teamwork and an entire effort by the club to get the job done. Medicine Hat, led by Chad Butcher, were successful at limiting Everett's chances in the period and capitalizing on some of their own. Butcher would strip Noah Juulsen at the blueline while on the penalty kill and break in on a clear cut breakaway. Butcher used his quick snap shot to roof the puck on Hart and tie the game up, scoring Medicine Hat's second shorthanded goal of the season. Just before the period ended, Tips forward Remi Laurencelle was called for slashing and the Tigers made him pay as Cole Sanford lit the lamp with his 8th of the year, giving the Tabbies a 2-1 lead after 2 periods.

In the final frame, the next goal was crucial and Medicine Hat started out with a 5 on 3 power play as Everett was caught for a roughing minor and a bench minor at the end of the second. The Tigers would come close a few times but Hart came up big for the visitors, stopping all 5 shots on the man advantage. Using the momentum from the penalty kill the Silvertips looked hungry for the next goal and that's where Nick Schneider took over, making big save after big save to keep Medicine Hat in the game and with the lead. Despite a large push with the empty net, Everett couldn't give anymore and the Tigers would take a 2-1 victory into the books, snapping a 2 game losing streak.
