Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings fell 8-2 to the Regina Pats on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Place.
The Pats raced out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes getting a goal at even-strength and one on the power play.
Borya Valis opened the scoring for Regina just over five minutes into the contest after he converted on a backdoor setup from Connor Bedard.
Tanner Howe made it a 2-0 lead for the visitors on a man-advantage just past the halfway mark of the opening period after he banked in a centering pass from the left-wing corner off an Edmonton defender.
In the second period, the Pats pulled away getting four goals on 16 shots.
Easton Armstrong made it 3-0 Regina 5:29 into the middle stanza after working a perfect give-and-go with Alexander Suzdalev.
Suzdalev got his turn to finish just a couple minutes later as he was setup for a one-time blast into the back of the Edmonton net by Bedard on a two-on-one rush.
Late in the second period, Armstrong buried his second of the period after jumping on a rebound in front of the Edmonton net on another Regina power play.
With 55 seconds left before the intermission, Valis tucked in his second of the game after finishing off a three-way passing play between himself, Howe and Bedard.
In the third period, the Oil Kings and Pats would divvy up four goals evenly with both teams turning on the red light twice.
31 seconds into the third period, Bedard collected his 27th goal of the season after getting sprung on a partial break and elevating a shot into the top shelf.
At 6:47 of the third period, Vojtech Port broke the Regina shutout bid as he finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play between himself, Luca Hauf and Gavin Hodnett.
Just under three minutes later, Armstrong completed his hat-trick after he picked a low corner from the right-circle of the Edmonton zone.
Hodnett capped the scoring on the afternoon just ahead of the 10-minute mark of the third after he was able to toss home a rebound from in front of the Regina net.
Ronin Geraghty (17 saves) and Kolby Hay (12 saves) combined for 29 saves in the Edmonton crease, while Drew Sim made 23 for Regina. The Oil Kings did not receive a power play in the game, the Pats capitalized on two of their five power play chances.
