Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Lethbridge, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings could not shake off the bus legs fast enough. They let the Lethbridge Hurricanes jump out to a daunting 3 nothing lead after 20 minutes of play and fought back the best they could - literally. Lethbridge held on for a 5 - 3 win and the Oil Kings are now winless in 4 after a difficult 3 game in 3 night stretch that saw them play in 3 different cities. Carter Ashton scored the hat trick for Lethbridge while Colton Sceviour finished with a 4 point night as the Hurricanes snap out of 6 game winless skid of their own.
Dwight King got things going for the home team about 8 minutes into the hockey game but the big blow came a few minutes later when Ashton scored a pair of goals in the span of 1:57 to give the Hurricanes their commanding lead after 20 minutes of play. Lethbridge outshot Edmonton 13 - 4 in the opening frame and didn't look back.
Clayton Cumiskey got the Oil Kings on the board early in the second period but then the game got out of hand in a hurry.
Things got ugly when Jesse Pearson leveled a Hurricane with a big hit and Brennan Yadlowski took exception and immediately dropped the gloves to pick a fight with the rookie defenseman. During the fight, Yadlowski was cut and Pearson was assessed a match penalty but no instigator penalty was handed out in the ordeal. Oil Kings Head Coach Steve Pleau was livid on the bench and ended up getting a misconduct penalty and was tossed. So instead of the Oil Kings going on the powerplay, the Hurricanes ended up with the man advantage.
Despite all of that, Edmonton scored the next goal of the game when Shayne Neigum tallied his first of 2 on the night. It was 3 - 2 with more than half the hockey game to play.
Tempers flared again about 4 minutes later when the Hurricanes Ben Wright nailed T.J. Foster from behind resulting in just a 2 minute minor for checking from behind. More fights ensued and the Oil Kings were working with a pretty short bench.
Carter Ashton would score his hat trick goal when the dust settled which turned out to be his third game winning goal of the season. King's second of the game and 11th of the season gave Lethbridge even more of a cushion early in the third period. Neigum's second of the game made the final score 5 - 3.
Edmonton's record drops to 9-14-1-3 while the Hurricanes improve to 10-11-0-1. The Oil Kings will get some days off to recover from their hectic schedule and will return to action this Friday when they head to Red Deer to play the Rebels. The next home game is the following night when the Prince Albert Raiders make their first visit to Rexall Place. It's free mini-stick night. The Oil Kings are giving away mini-sticks to the first 5000 fans.
