The Vancouver Giants scored three third period goals to break open a close game and defeat the Portland Winter Hawks by a score of 5-2 in front of 9,018 at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver on Sunday night.
The loss snapped the Hawks three game winning and dropped their record to 7-15-0-0.
Portland got on the scoreboard first, when Killian Hutt took a feed from Colin Reddin on an odd-man rush and beat Vancouver goaltender Jamie Tucker over the glove with a wrist shot with nine minutes remaining in the opening period.
Vancouver would score the next four goals - even strength goals from Brent Regner and Garry Nunn, a power play goal from Jonathan Blum, and a short-handed goal from James Henry. Evander Kane would add an empty net goal to round out the scoring for Vancouver.
Portland's second goal was scored by Radim Valchar, set up by Luke Walker and Brock Cornish, to cut the lead to 4-2 with five minutes remaining, but Portland could get no closer.
Keith Hamilton went the distance in net for Portland, stopping 33 of 37 shots in the loss while Tucker handled 18 of 20 for the victory for Vancouver.
On special teams, Portland went 0 for 3 on the power play while Vancouver went 1 for 3 with the man advantage.
Next up, the Hawks take on the Chilliwack Bruins on Tuesday night, game time is 7:00.
