Oil Kings Blanked 1-0 in Vancouver
February 8, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
On Family Day in British Columbia, Vancouver Giants fans were treated to a 1-0 shutout win Monday afternoon snapping the Edmonton Oil Kings modest four-game winning streak.
The Giants got a power play goal from Ben Thomas late in the third and starting netminder Ryan Kubic was exceptional stopping all 28 shots he faced including a Tyler Robertson penalty shot in the first period. The shutout was his 4th on the year.
Oil Kings goaltender Patrick Dea continued his red hot play of late stopping 22 of 23 shots in the loss. Dea's last loss in regulation was back on January 2 in Medicine Hat. The 18-year-old St. Albert native had a shutout streak of 160:27 until the Thomas goal.
It was a tight defensive battle most of the game, but Jesse Roach, who is from Quesnel, BC, had a few good chances, however was unable to solve Kubic. Robertson had the other excellent scoring chance for Edmonton when he was hauled down on a breakaway in the first resulting in a penalty shot. Robertson tried to go stick side but was turned away by Kubic.
The Oil Kings are now 0/2 on penalty shots for this season, as Kobe Mohr had the only other attempt back on November 27 vs Prince Albert.
The loss leaves Edmonton with 53 points after 54 games on the year, putting them in 8th place in the Eastern Conference. They are tied with the 7th place Regina Pats, but have played two more games.
The Oil Kings finish their four game west coast swing with a game tomorrow evening in Victoria. Game time is 8pm MT and Corey Graham has the call on TSN 1260.
