MWL1 Great Lakes Loons

Offensive Fireworks on the Fourth

July 4, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

LANSING, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons had spent the first two days of a four-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts searching for their patented "big" inning. On Thursday night, that inning finally came as Luke Heyer hit a grand slam as part of a five-run, sixth inning aiding the Loons in an 8-1 victory at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Heyer's grand slam came with no outs off Joey Pulido and became the second "granny" in Loons franchise history on the Fourth of July (Blake Smith, 2010). The other runs for the Loons were thanks to an RBI-single by Leonel Valera in the third inning and a run-scoring double by Hunter Feduccia in the eighth.

While the Loons offense was coming alive for the first time in a couple of days, their pitching staff turned in another fine performance led by Jose Martinez. The 20-year-old Venezuelan allowed one run in five innings with six strikeouts and the combination of Justin Hagenman, Justin Bruihl and Yeison Cespedes threw the final four innings.

Martinez (W, 5-1) earned his first win since June 10. Pulido (L, 2-4) gave up five runs in two innings.

The series finale between Great Lakes and Lansing is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Friday night. Radio pregame coverage starts at 6:35 on ESPN 100.9-FM.
