Clinton LumberKings News Release
CLINTON, IA - Thomas Jones knocked in three and the Clinton LumberKings ran their winning streak to three games with a 6-2 win over the Peoria Chiefs at NelsonCorp Field in front of a sellout Fourth of July crowd. The win was the LumberKings (9-5, 42-41) seventh straight against the Chiefs (3-11, 33-50), setting a new franchise record for consecutive wins against Peoria.
Pitching was the theme through the first three innings with Clinton starter Tyler Jones and Chiefs starter Michael Baird matching zeros.
The scoreless tie was broken by the LumberKings in the bottom of the fourth inning against Baird (0-1). Three doubles in the frame led to two runs and a lead Clinton would not surrender. Bubba Hollins doubled to open the inning and was chased home by an Evan Edwards RBI double to left. On the very next pitch, Thomas Jones doubled past the bag at third for the second run of the inning.
Jones was much of the Clinton offense; going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored, and a double.
The 2-0 lead was added on to in the bottom of the fifth when the LumberKings broke out for four runs. Three walks in the inning set the table, before Jones collected the only hit of the inning with a two-run single to left center field.
Starter Tyler Jones (3-4) picked up the win for Clinton with a masterful start that set professional career highs for innings pitched, 6.2, and strikeouts, seven. He allowed no runs during his time out on three hits while walking none.
Peoria scored their only runs of the night in the top of the ninth on a two-run triple from Brandon Riley with two out in the inning. Bryce Howe then retired Wadye Ynfante on a ground out to third that ended the game and gave Clinton their ninth win over their last 11 games.
The LumberKings will conclude their two-game series with the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night! Clinton will throw righty Tanner Andrews (2-3, 3.77) while Peoria will tap righty Kyle Leahy (4-5, 2.64). First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas with the pregame show on 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI or online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio app.
