
Alek Thomas Hits for Cycle, Cougars Stun Chiefs

Peoria, Illinois - Alek Thomas hit for the cycle, helping the Kane County Cougars (45-37, 10-3) storm back to beat the Peoria Chiefs (33-49, 3-10) 5-4 on Wednesday night at Dozer Park. Thomas is the first Cougar to hit for the cycle since Cael Brockmeyer on June 29th, 2014.
Thomas' single came in his first at-bat in the first inning. In the third, Thomas drove in the game's first run with a triple to score Tra Holmes and make it 1-0 Cougars.
Peoria grabbed its first lead of the night with a four-run third inning. Josh Shaw tied the game, 1-1, on a run-scoring double to right. Two hitters later, Andres Luna collected an RBI two-bagger, plating two runs. Cougar starter Jackson Goddard balked in the fourth run of the inning. The right-hander did not record an out in the third, he was yanked after 2+ innings, charged for four runs on five hits.
Thomas went deep in the fifth, a solo shot to bring him a double shy of the cycle. That cut the Chiefs' lead in half, 4-2. Thomas led off the eighth inning. He stroked an 0-1 pitch to the gap in right-center and hustled out a double to complete the cycle. After the double, Thomas came around to score on Buddy Kennedy's RBI ground out, chiseling the Cougar deficit to 4-3.
In the top of the ninth, Tra Holmes reached on a single with one out. Eduardo Diaz tied the game on a triple. Jose Herrera provided the go-ahead run with an RBI ground out.
The Cougar bullpen did not allow a run over seven innings of work. Wesley Rodriguez (4-1) earned the win with three innings of one-hit ball. Kai-Wei Lin (3) earned the save, pitching a scoreless ninth. Eli Kraus (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing the winning run in the ninth.
The Cougars head back home to celebrate the Fourth of July on Thursday night against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. First pitched is scheduled for 6:30 P.M.
