Offense Returns for Grizzlies in 8-2 Win

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Gateway Grizzlies scored eight times on 14 hits Tuesday night, defeating the Kalamazoo Kings 8-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Homer Stryker Field.
The eight runs were the most for the Grizzlies since an 8-2 win at Evansville June 21. The win is the first in a series-opening game on the road this year for Gateway (19-19).
John Flanagan (4-1) earned the win in impressive fashion. Flanagan retired the first 13 hitters he faced Tuesday night, before hitting a batter in the fifth inning. The left-hander didn't allow the first Kings' hit until there was one out in the seventh. He gave up two runs on three hits over seven full innings. He walked one and struck out five. He is the first Grizzlies pitcher to four wins this season.
The Grizzlies got out to 6-0 lead before Kalamazoo (7-30) scored twice in the seventh inning.
Jason Patton paced the offense with four RBIs. He was 3 for 5 with a pair of two-run doubles. Breck Draper was 2 for 5 with a solo home run and an RBI double. Brandon Peters was 4 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Bobby Burk also had a pair of hits for the Grizzlies. He was 2 for 5.
The Grizzlies and Kings will play game two of the series Wednesday night in Kalamazoo. First pitch is set for 6:05 pm central time.
