Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release
The Rockies split the four-game home-and-away series on Sunday as they fell to the Owlz 9-1 at UCCU Ballpark.
Early on, Orem put an end to their 18-inning scoreless streak and took the 1-0 lead as D'Shawn Knowles crossed the plate on a Turner Brown error in the first.
Christian Koss helped Grand Junction respond in the third with a sac-fly that scored Eddy Diaz to even the game at 1-1 but it'd be the first and last run that the visitors generated.
In the bottom of the same frame, Orem took the lead convincingly with a Jose Verrier three-run homer that pushed the score to 4-1. The Owlz then exploded in the sixth as reliever Blair Calvo was tagged for five unearned, highlighted by two two-run home runs from Kevin Arias and Will Wilson that put the game out of reach 9-1.
Helcris Olivarez took his third loss of the year for GJ as he allowed four earned runs on six hits during his four-inning start.
After going five innings for the second straight start against the Rockies, Kelvin Moncion earned the win with two strikeouts and just one unearned.
Jake Opitz and company will have the next three days off during the All-Star break as Christian Koss, Colin Simpson, Eddy Diaz, and Anderson Bido will represent the Rockies and the Pioneer Baseball League against the Northwest League on Tuesday.
