Iowa Cubs News Release
The Iowa Cubs fell to the Memphis Redbirds 6-2 on Monday afternoon. The Redbirds (6-12) roughed up Iowa starter Jay Jackson for five runs--four earned--on eight hits over five innings. RHP Joe Kelly shut down the I-Cubs' (8-11) offense, surrendering two runs on seven hits over six solid innings of work. Kelly improved to 1-1 on the season and Jackson fell to 1-2.
Memphis erupted for a three-run second inning against Jackson with a double, a triple, and three singles in the frame. 1B Ryan Jackson did not have a case of the Mondays, going 4-for-5 with three singles, a double, two RBI and a run scored. The Redbirds sprinkled their 12 hits, going down in order in the third, fifth, sixth, and ninth. Every Memphis starting position player reached base, and all but RF Eugenio Velez and pitcher Joe Kelly from the starting lineup recorded a hit.
Anthony Rizzo stayed hot reaching base in three of his four plate appearances, roping a double and scoring in the sixth after a single and a walk earlier in the game. The first baseman improved his team-leading batting average to .380, after starting the day ninth in the league. Rizzo saved more runs than he scored, laying out to snag a potential bases-clearing double down the right field line in the seventh.
Iowa went for the small ball approach, with both Cubs' runs scoring on RBI groundouts by SS Luis Valbuena and C Welington Castillo. RF Dave Sappelt (1-for-4) extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the sixth. CF Brett Jackson went 2-for-4 with two singles, a stolen base, and a run scored.
Nate Robertson and the newest I-Cub, RHP Frank Batista, came in from the bullpen to complete the game for the Iowa. Batista worked out of trouble in his Iowa debut, stranding two runners in scoring position to leave the eighth unscathed. He then tossed a perfect ninth, fanning one for a scoreless relief appearance.
The Cubs will go for the series split tomorrow with another 12:05 p.m. start at Principal Park. LHP Travis Wood (1-1) will toe the rubber for Iowa against RHP Shelby Miller (1-2). Tomorrow is the final game of a four-game set, before an off day on Wednesday. Iowa opens a four-game series with the Nashville Sounds on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. Fans can tune in to Iowa Cubs action with Deene Ehlis and Randy Wehofer on AM 940 with the pregame show beginning at 11:45 a.m.
