York Revolution News Release
Brian Burgamy made a lead-saving defensive play in the top of the seventh, and then sparked the York Revolution's biggest offensive inning in three seasons in the bottom of the seventh, as the Revs blew out the Somerset Patriots 15-8 on Wednesday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The Revs will go for their second three-game winning streak of the homestand when they wrap up the 10-game stay at home on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
Holding a 5-4 lead, Revs reliever Julio DePaula found himself in trouble after a pair of seeing-eye singles led off the seventh. DePaula retired Mike Wilson on a line drive to right for the second out, and received the second greatest defensive play of the night by the Revs to escape the jam. With runners at the corners, Luis Montanez lofted a pop up behind first. Burgamy turned and ran it down with an over-the-shoulder grab, then pivoted and fired a one-hop strike to the plate, nailing Jake Fox attempting to score the tying run, ending the inning. The only better defensive play in the game came from right fielder Jeff Fiorentino, who went airborne to make a diving catch in right-center ending the top of the fifth inning.
Burgamy then ripped the first of three consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, setting the stage for a nine-run outburst, the Revs biggest in one inning since scoring nine against the Lancaster Barnstormers on September 11, 2010. The nine-run inning tied the second biggest in club history.
Fiorentino came up with the first run-producing hit, nailing a two-run double to deep right-center, giving the Revs some breathing room with a 7-4 lead. Salvador Paniagua later stroked a two-run double down the right field line, increasing the lead to 9-4. Another run scored on a two-out throwing error by shortstop Bobby Stevens, before Burgamy laced his second hit of the inning, an RBI single to center to make it 11-4. Andy Marte put an exclamation point on the outburst with a towering three-run homer to left, his third of the year.
Ruddy Yan plated one more run for the Revs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to center, picking up an RBI in his Revs debut. It capped the biggest run-scoring performance for the Revs on the season, who have now scored double digits in six of their first 20 games.
York took an early lead when Andy Gonzalez singled up the middle, driving in the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. It extended Gonzalez' hitting streak to nine consecutive games, the team's longest of the season so far, and gave York the first run of the game for the first time in nine games on the current homestand.
Somerset took a brief lead in the top of the third as Fox launched a two-run homer to left-center, his league-best eighth of the season.
York answered right back in the home half of the inning, as Burgamy went opposite field for a two-run homer of his own, reclaiming the lead at 3-2. The Revs tacked on two more in the fifth on a Gonzalez sac fly, and a throwing error by pitcher Mitch Atkins (3-1) on a fielder's choice.
The Patriots rallied for two in the sixth, shrinking the lead to 5-4, as James Skelton singled home a run, and Stevens drove in another on a fielder's choice. Reliever Joe Torres came on for starter Nick Green (2-0) and stranded two runners, however, preserving the lead.
Somerset scored four times in the ninth on an RBI single from Corey Smith, a two-run double by Wilson, and an RBI groundout by Adam Donachie to provide the final margin.
The Revs pounded out 17 total hits, one night after setting a season-high with 18 knocks. They also rapped 14 base hits in the series opener, having totaled 49 hits in the first three games. Burgamy was 4-for-5 with a homer, three RBI, and four runs scored. Andres Perez also scored four times, going 3-for-5 with a double. Marte reached base safely all five times, drawing two walks, and going 3-for-3 with his three-run homer.
York will close its longest homestand of the season on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. with right-hander Matt Fox (1-0, 0.75) opposing Somerset's Josh Lowey (1-1, 4.60). Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
