Winston-Salem Dash News Release
LYNCHBURG, Va. (June 23, 2014) - Joe Odom, Lynchburg's nine-hole hitter, sent Monday's game to extra innings with a solo shot in the eighth, and his sacrifice fly in the 10th clinched the Hillcats' eighth walk-off win of the season, 6-5 over Winston-Salem at Calvin Falwell Field.
Eric Garcia led off the home half of the 10th with a double that narrowly evaded the diving effort of Jacob May near the track in dead center field. Edison Sanchez pushed Garcia to third on a fly out to deep right, and Odom followed with a sacrifice fly to left to cap a three-hit, three-RBI game.
The Dash (2-3, 32-42) claimed a short-lived 5-4 lead with three in the top of the seventh. Hawkins delivered a two-out, two-run triple to knot the score, and he scored on Jason Coats' sacrifice fly.
However, Odom's aforementioned blast just to the left of the 390-foot sign in center field, his second homer of the contest, knotted the contest in the eighth and forced extra innings. Odom's other home run came in the sixth frame. He entered the contest with two homers in his first 34 games with Lynchburg.
The Hillcats (3-1, 37-37) tallied a run in each of the first three innings, and they started all of those frames with an extra-base hit. Those three men would later score against Winston-Salem starter J.B. Wendelken, who logged six innings and settled for a no decision.
Out of the bullpen, Sean Hagan tossed a scoreless seventh inning, while Braulio Ortiz (0-7) surrendered Odom's game-tying homer and walk-off sacrifice fly in his seventh loss, which are tied for the most in the Carolina League.
The Dash would pull within one thanks to a run in the fourth and the fifth. Keon Barnum, who matched a season high with three hits, scored Winston-Salem's first run on an error, and a wild pitch netted a score in the fifth.
Jarett Miller held Winston-Salem in check other than those two runs over his six innings. Benino Pruneda surrendered the Dash's three runs in the seventh before turning things over to Ronan Pacheco (2-0), who twirled three hitless innings en route to the victory.
This series concludes Tuesday night at 7:05. The Dash send Tony Bucciferro (5-5, 3.59 ERA) to the mound to tangle with fellow righty Wes Parsons (4-3, 3.75 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:50 on wsdash.com/broadcast.
The Dash return home Saturday at 7 p.m. for the opener of a three-game set against the Carolina Mudcats. BB&T Ballpark will also host postgame fireworks displays on Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5. For tickets to an upcoming Dash game, call (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
