Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina League announced Ryan Merritt as the Pitcher of the Week for June 16-22. The Carolina Mudcats' left-handed hurler matched a career-best by tossing eight innings in a 6-1 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on June 22 at Five County Stadium. This is the first CL weekly award for the McKinney, Texas, native.

Merritt, 22, held the Pelicans to a run on three hits with five strikeouts and walk as he improved his record to 7-2. He retired 12 straight hitters at one point and held Myrtle Beach to four base runners.

His seven wins are tied for the most in the CL and his 1.61 ERA ranks second in Advanced-A. For the season, Merritt owns the best WHIP in the CL (0.93), the second best Batting Average Against (.199) and has pitched the second most innings (84.0).

The southpaw earned the starting nod for the Carolina League All-Stars against the California League in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 17. In his one inning of work, Merritt used 14 pitches to retire the Cal League in order. The Cleveland Indians selected Merritt in the 16th round of the 2011 draft out of McLennan Community College. Going back to 2013 with the Lake County Captains, Merritt has allowed just 28 earned runs in his last 137 2/3 innings, a 1.83 ERA.

The Mudcats finish their series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Tuesday, June 24. It's Dollar Dog Day at Five County Stadium with a special start time of 11 a.m. Gates open at 10 a.m. Tickets and other information are available by calling the box office at (919) 269-2287 or by logging on to carolinamudcats.com.
