Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans rallied from two deficits to upend the Carolina Mudcats 6-4 in 10 innings on Monday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (3-2, 32-40) were unsuccessful in converting the winning run with less than two out in the ninth. The Pelicans (3-2, 47-26) used an error in the 10th to jumpstart the decisive rally.
D.J. Brown (2-5) shouldered a bitter loss for the Mudcats after allowing four runs, two earned, across 5 2/3 innings. He allowed three hits, walked four and struck out three. Jose Leclerc (4-1) took home the win for Myrtle Beach after two scoreless innings in relief. Alexander Claudio tossed a near-perfect final frame for his fourth save.
Tied 4-4 in the last of the ninth, Luigi Rodriguez laced a one-out triple into the left-center gap. The Pelicans intentionally walked LeVon Washington and Todd Hankins drew a base on balls to load them up. With the winning run 90 feet from home, Leclerc struck out Erik Gonzalez and Yandy Diaz to end the threat.
Brown retired the first two batters of the 10th inning, but allowed a walk to David Lyon. Chris Grayson bounced a grounder to short that Gonzalez was unable to handle clean. Grant Sides replaced Brown after the error. The right-hander immediately surrendered consecutive singles to Christopher Bostick and Kevin Torres that scored the pivotal runs.
The Mudcats staked an early 2-0 lead with a pair of two-out hits in the first inning. Washington led off the inning with a double and immediately moved to third on a wild pitch. Carolina could not score their right fielder with less than two out. However, Joe Sever lined a single to right, allowing Washington score. Diaz, who drew a prior walk, moved to third and scored on a single by Jeremy Lucas.
Myrtle Beach rallied to tie the score at 2-2 against Michael Peoples. Bostick singled with two out in the second. A pair of wild pitches moved him to third and he scored on a hit by Torres. Grayson drove a deep fly to center in the fourth to plate Nick Vickerson in the fourth.
Rodriguez pushed the Mudcats back in front with a solo home run to right field in the fifth. Lucas plated his second run of the night on a single in the sixth and the Mudcats held a 4-2 advantage.
Walks and an error hurt the Mudcats in the seventh, as the Pelicans scored twice. Torres drew a base on balls to begin the frame and moved to third on a bunt single by Chris Garia and a throwing error from third baseman Diaz. Preston Beck walked with one out to load the bases.
Jorge Alfaro rolled a grounder to second, but the Mudcats could not turn the double play in time as Torres scored. Vickerson's only hit of the night brought in Garia from third to square the game again.
The Mudcats go for their first series win against the Pelicans since 2012 on Monday night. First pitch at Five County Stadium is set for 7 p.m. and gates open to fans at 6 p.m. Tickets and other information are available by calling the box office at (919) 269-2287 or by logging on to carolinamudcats.com.
