Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

ZEBULON, N.C. (JUNE 23, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, never led in regulation but beat the Carolina Mudcats 6-4 in ten innings on Monday night at Five County Stadium. Christopher Bostick went 3-for-5 with the go-ahead RBI single in the tenth to put the Pelicans ahead for the first time and for good.

Myrtle Beach (3-2, 47-26) trailed 2-0 and 4-2 but tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh.

In the tenth, the Pelicans rallied with two outs against DJ Brown and Grant Sides. David Lyon began the threat with a six-pitch walk. Chris Grayson reached on an error to shortstop, putting men at the corners. Against the new pitcher, Bostick laced a single through the left side of the infield to put the Birds ahead for the first time in the game. Torres added insurance with a single, and the Pelicans went on to win it 6-4.

Carolina (3-2, 32-40) led early, getting two runs off of Luis Parra in the first. The Pelicans got back-to-back two out knocks from Bostick and Torres in the second to cut the lead to 2-1 and picked up a sacrifice fly from Grayson in the fourth to tie it.

The Mudcats went ahead in the fifth getting a solo home run from Luigi Rodriguez, his fifth and second of the half. They added another in a three-hit sixth inning. Both runs scored off of the Birds' first reliever, Jason Knapp. Parra went only 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, a walk, and two strikeouts in the no decision.

Down 4-2 in the seventh, the Pelicans finally got to the piggybacking starter Brown. He faced just one over the minimum in his first two innings, but in the seventh, another leadoff walk sparked a rally. Torres drew the walk, which was followed by a bunt single by Chris Garia and throwing error to put two in scoring position with no outs. After Preston Beck walked to load the bases, Jorge Alfaro brought one run across on a fielder's choice, and Nick Vickerson lined a single to center to tie things up.

The tenth inning heroics would not have been possible without the clutch pitching of Jose Leclerc. The right-hander fired a perfect eighth inning but got into a jam in the ninth. With one out, Rodriguez split the left-center field gap with a triple. The Pelicans elected to intentionally walk LeVon Washington and then Leclerc unintentionally walked Todd Hankins on nine pitches.

With the bases loaded and only one out, Leclerc fanned Erik Gonzalez on an 0-2 fastball and Yandy Diaz on an 0-2 curveball to get out of the jam and send the game to extra innings.

After the Birds took the 6-4 lead, Alexander Claudio closed things out in the bottom of the tenth. He hit Jeremy Lucas with one out, but the catcher never advanced past first base, and Claudio picked up his fourth save.

Leclerc (4-1) was the winner in relief, while Brown (2-5) suffered the defeat.

It's a quick turnaround for the Pelicans who wrap up the series on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Five County Stadium. Chad Bell (1-0, 3.18 ERA) takes the ball opposing Cole Sulser (2-6, 5.19 ERA). The game can be heard live on WRNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Hampton Inn Pregame Show at 10:40 a.m.

The Pelicans return home on Wednesday, June 25 for a three-game series with the Potomac Nationals. Wednesday night is Wiener Wednesday, sponsored by WPDE. Fans can purchase one-dollar hot dogs all game.
