Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM DASH (2-2, 32-41) at LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (2-1, 36-37)

RHP J.B. Wendelken (5-6, 3.76 ERA) vs. RHP Jarett Miller (3-6, 4.46 ERA)

7:05 p.m. - Calvin Falwell Field (Lynchburg, Va.) Game #74 (Road Game #37)

SEVENTH INNING SINKS WINSTON-SALEM The Dash knotted the score in the top of the seventh, but Lynchburg responded with five in the home half of the frame to earn an 8-3 win over Winston-Salem on Sunday night at Calvin Falwell Field. In the deciding seventh, Lynchburg strung together six consecutive hits. At one point, the Hillcats mustered four straight RBI doubles. Kyle Hansen, who suffered the loss on Sunday, had worked two scoreless innings before failing to retire any of the four Hillcats he faced in the bottom of the seventh. As a result, Winston-Salem has dropped back-to-back games since starting the second half with a 2-0 mark.

BULLPEN BLUNDERS In their two losses since the All-Star break, the Dash have surrendered 21 runs, and all but three of these tallies have come around against Winston's bullpen over nine innings of work. In Salem's 13-4 rout of Winston-Salem on Saturday, Dash relievers allowed 13 runs (10 earned), while the bullpen trio that entered Sunday's contest gave up five total runs. This slump has caused the bullpen's overall ERA to balloon from 4.10 to 4.53 over the course of 48 hours.

OVERDUE SEVEN FOR NUMBER SEVEN Tim Anderson is eighth in the Carolina League with a .300 batting average, but the former first-round pick had not hit safely in more than six straight games until his current hitting streak. Anderson has a seven-game run dating back to June 14, and he is hitting .313 (10-for-32) with five RBIs and six runs scored. He hit .250 in April and is a .327 hitter ever since.

COATS IN JUNE In 19 games this month, outfielder Jason Coats boasts a .333 batting average to go along with five long balls and 21 RBIs. His RBI total is good for a share of seventh place in the Minors and sole possession of second place among High-A hitters. Overall in 2014, Coats' 12 home runs are second-most in the Carolina League, and he is tied for fourth with 46 RBIs.

NO LOVE IN LYNCHBURG Since the start of the 2012 season, Lynchburg has handled Winston-Salem to the tune of a 30-19 (.612) mark in the regular season. The Dash have lost 19 of their 27 games at Calvin Falwell Field since 2012, and this trend includes Lynchburg's one-run wins over the Dash in Game 3 and Game 4 of the 2012 Mills Cup Championship Series. From 2009-11, Winston-Salem dominated the Hillcats (37-23, .617).

DON'T WALK THIS WAY Winston-Salem starters have done a remarkable job of limiting walks throughout the season. Dash starters have averaged fewer than two free passes per nine innings (87 walks in 396.0 frames, 1.98/9IP). The two members of the Dash's Opening Day rotation to remain in that role, right-handers Tony Bucciferro and J.B. Wendelken, have only walked a combined 20 batters in 164.1 innings (1.1 per nine frames).

DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES CONTINUE The Dash made another error on Sunday, pushing their 2014 total to 110. In the last five games, Winston-Salem has made 13 defensive miscues. The Dash sit in a tie for second place in all of Minor League Baseball in errors, trailing only Fort Wayne (132). Winston-Salem does pace the Minors with 99 unearned runs. With 81 unearned tallies, the TinCaps are the closest competitor to Winston-Salem.

DASH DOTS Monday starter J.B. Wendelken stands seventh in the Carolina League with 79.0 innings of work...He trails teammate Tony Bucciferro, the circuit's leader, by 6.1 innings for the top spot... Entering this season, Wendelken had only thrown 100.1 innings in his professional career... Seven of the first nine meetings between the Dash and Hillcats have been decided by three runs or less...Winston-Salem is 0-4 in road games played on Monday...Omar Narvaez is 4-for-9 with two homers, five RBIs and three runs in his first three games at the High-A level.
