Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (June 23rd, 2013) -- The Nuts were able to erase a 4-0 first inning deficit to eventually beat the Rawhide, 6-5, on Sunday night at John Thurman Field.
With the win, Modesto (4-0, 36-28) completed a four-game sweep over Visalia (0-4, 39-95) to start the second-half of the season with a perfect 4-0 record. After a rough 32-38 first half, the Nuts now sit in first-place in the North Division for the first time all season.
The Nuts trailed 5-1 into the sixth inning, until they rallied against Rawhide starter Robert Coe to tie the game. Taylor Featherston singled home Tyler Massey to make it a three run game, and after there were two outs and the bases loaded, Will Swanner delivered a 3-run double to make it a new ballgame.
After going four innings without a hit against Coe, Swanner got the Nuts offense in gear with a two-out double in the fifth as well. Trevor Story followed with an RBI double to get the Nuts on the board, making it a 4-1 score.
Modesto then took the lead in the seventh against reliever Seth Simmons. Jose Rivera opened the inning with a walk, and after Simmons struck out two batters, Taylor Featherston lined an 0-2 pitched off the glove of shortstop Raul Navarro, with Rivera sprinting all the way from first to score on the go-ahead RBI single.
The Rawhide threatened to tie the game in the top of the eighth, getting a lead-off walk against Russell Brewer, but Ken Roberts came into the game and stranded a man at third to preserve the lead.
Scott Oberg worked around a two-out single by Jon Griffin in the ninth to notch his league-leading 16th save of the year.
Visalia raced out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first against Nuts starter Chris Jensen, who issued a lead-off walk to Kevin Madrano before allowing four consecutive hits to start the game, the latter three each scoring a run. Jensen did not record an out in the inning until the sixth batter in the order, Raul Navarro, dropped down a sac-bunt to move two men into scoring position. Steven Rodriguez followed with a sac-fly to make it 4-0 before Jensen retired Kerry Jenkins to finally end the inning.
The Rawhide would also get two hits against Jensen in the second, but he got through the inning with no damage done. Following the second hit in that inning by David Nick, Modesto was able to hold 27 consecutive batters without a hit until Griffin singled against Oberg in the ninth.
Modesto also started the 2012 second half with a 4-0 start, and went on to win the North Division with a record of 39-31. The Nuts will hope to keep their hot start going as they get set to hit the road for 19 of their next 25 games, starting with a seven-game road trip. First up is a three-game series in San Jose starting on Monday night at 7 p.m. The contest will pit two of the top pitchers in the league against one another, with Nuts RHP Dan Winkler (9-2, 2.15) set to face off against fellow All-Star LHP Ty Blach (7-2, 2.64).
