Bakersfield Blaze News Release
On a beautiful and breezy Dollar Monday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield, a large crowd of bleacher bums watched the Bakersfield Blaze and Lancaster Jethawks exchange jabs for six innings before the Jethawks pulled away late for a 6-3 win in the opener of a three game set.
Carlos Contreras (L, 3-7) got the start for Bakersfield, and immediately ran into trouble, allowing a walk and single to the first two batters. With one out, M.P. Cokinos dumped a cracked bat double down the rightfield line, scoring both, and Lancaster took a 2-0 lead.
Contreras turned up the heat from there, retiring 12 straight Jethawks into the 5th inning, and his team scratched back. The Blaze scored a run in the 1st off Jethawks starter Tyson Perez on three singles and a walk, but left the bases loaded, and added one more in the 2nd on a David Vidal double and Juan Silva single, and the game went to the bottom of the 5th tied at 2.
The game turned over the next inning, however, as the Blaze loaded the bases with nobody out against Michael Dimock (W, 1-0). Dimock fought his way out of the jam without a run coming across, and the Jethawks immediately scored twice in the 6th, taking the lead for good.
Vidal cranked his second homer to cut the Blaze deficit to 4-3 at one point, but that was as close as Bakersfield would get. Jacob Johnson allowed a pair of runs in the 8th inning in relief, pushing the Lancaster lead to three, 6-3, and the Blaze were unable to muster any additional offense against David Rollins (S, 3), who tossed the final four innings for the long save.
The loss is the fourth in a row for a suddenly struggling Blaze team, dropping the club to 1-4 in the second half, with two more games to go on the current homestand.
Join the Blaze at Sam Lynn Ballpark on Subway's $23 Tuesday, where family fourpacks are just 23 dollars, and include tickets, hot dogs and a program. Gates open at 6:45pm, and first pitch is scheduled for 7:45pm, with Kyle Hallock toeing the rubber for Lancaster and Shane Dyer for the Blaze.
