San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Modesto's Dan Winkler, Nelson Gonzalez and Scott Oberg combined to no-hit the San Jose Giants in a 2-0 Nuts victory on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. Winkler threw the first seven innings for Modesto before Gonzalez and Oberg each tossed an inning of relief to complete the no-hitter. The series-opening loss drops San Jose's overall record to 46-29.
Monday marked the first time since July 4, 1994 that the San Jose Giants have been no-hit. It was also the first no-hitter in Nuts team history (2005-2013). The Modesto franchise last threw a no-hitter when the A's accomplished the feat on August 15, 1987 versus Stockton.
Winkler (10-2), who entered the game first in the California League in ERA and strikeouts, retired 21 out of the 24 batters he faced. The All-Star right-hander issued three walks and struck out seven during his 102-pitch performance.
The Nuts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Taylor Featherston singled with two outs before Ryan Casteel ripped an RBI double into the left field corner.
Harrold Riggins made it 2-0 in the top of the sixth when he belted a two-out solo home run to deep right center field.
Meanwhile, the only three Giants baserunners of the night were a Jeff Arnold two-out walk in the bottom of the second, a leadoff walk to Bobby Haney in the fourth and a two-out walk to Devin Harris in the seventh inning.
In addition to his seven strikeouts, Winkler induced eight groundouts and recorded six fly outs. San Jose's best chance for a hit against Winkler came in the bottom of the sixth when Skyler Stromsmoe's slow grounder was stopped by a diving Featherston in the hole at second base.
Gonzalez then needed only nine pitches to breeze through a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth. In the ninth, Oberg quickly retired Chris Lofton and Haney on back-to-back groundouts. Brock Bond then hit a sharp grounder that deflected off of Oberg and bounced directly to the first baseman Riggins, who threw back to the pitcher covering the bag to beat a diving Bond for the final out. Oberg was credited with his league-leading 17th save of the season.
Ty Blach (7-3) suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering two runs (both earned) on six hits over six innings. He walked none and struck out seven.
Notes: San Jose was last no-hit on July 4, 1994 when Bakersfield Blaze pitcher Kym Ashworth threw a nine-inning no-hitter at Municipal Stadium ... Modesto out-hit the Giants by an 8-0 margin on Monday ... San Jose has gone 17 straight innings without scoring a run dating back to Sunday's 10-1 loss in Stockton ... Winkler lowered his ERA to 1.99 ... He's allowed just 47 hits in 92 2/3 innings this season.
On Deck: The Giants and Nuts continue their three-game series on Tuesday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 7:00 PM. Edwin Escobar (2-3, 3.18 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Modesto is expected to counter with Ben Alsup (4-8, 4.30 ERA).
