Stockton Ports News Release

MODESTO, Calif. - The Modesto Nuts ran away with the opener of a three-game series with the Stockton Ports on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field. The Nuts scored five runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 9-1 win over Stockton to open the final series of the season between the two North Division rivals.

The Nuts got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Wes Rogers opened the inning with a single and, two batters later, Josh Fuentes reached on an error committed by third baseman Jose Brizuela. Shane Hoelscher followed with an RBI double and Ryan Stephens followed that with an RBI groundout to give the Nuts a 2-0 lead.

Stockton cut the deficit in half in the third inning and took advantage of a Modesto error in the process. With two outs, Iolana Akau reached on an error committed by shortstop Luis Jean and scored on an ensuing double by James Harris to make it a 2-1 score.

Stockton's third inning run was unearned and the only run allowed by Nuts starter Jack Wynkoop (4-2), who earned the win after going six innings and allowing seven hits while striking out three.

Modesto got the run right back in the bottom of the third. With one out, Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs (3-6) gave up three straight singles that loaded the bases. Stephens came up with the bases loaded and one out and hit a sac-fly to center to make it a 3-1 Nuts lead.

Friedrichs gave up one more run in the fourth inning. Robbie Perkins led off the frame with a triple and scored on an ensuing groundout by Luis Jean to push the Nuts lead to 4-1. Friedrichs went on to suffer his fifth straight loss, going five innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out four.

Corey Miller took over for Friedrichs in the sixth inning, an inning in which Modesto put its stamp on the contest. With one out, Perkins and Max White hit back-to-back singles. With runners at the corners, Jean provided a bunt single that scored White from third to make it 5-1. Two batters later with two outs, Wall delivered an RBI single to left and Fuentes followed with a two-run single to left that ran the Modesto lead to 8-1. The Ports then committed back-to-back fielding errors as Hoelscher reached on a fielding error committed by Mikey White and Stephens reached on a fielding error committed by shortstop Richie Martin that allowed a fifth run to score in the frame to make it 9-1.

Modesto sent 10 to the plate in the sixth and scored five runs (four earned) off of Miller, who allowed five hits and did not record a strikeout in his lone inning of work.

Carlos Navas took over for Stockton in the seventh and set down six of the seven batters he faced, pitching around a second error of the night committed by Brizuela to begin the fifth, Stockton's fifth error of the contest.

Beginning with the final out of the fifth inning, Modesto pitching combined to retire 13 of the final 14 batters of the game. Craig Schlitter tossed two perfect innings and recorded two strikeouts while Yoely Bello hit Martin with two outs in the ninth but struck out Seth Brown to end the contest.

The five errors committed by Stockton matches the most errors they've committed in a game this season as they had five errors versus Visalia on June 7th.

The Ports and Nuts play the middle game of their three-game series on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field. Casey Meisner (0-12, 4.20 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Ryan Castellani (5-8, 4.19 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
