Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped game one of the six-game home stand against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Tuesday, losing 4-2 at LoanMart Field.

Rancho's offense sputtered with just three hits, and Erick Mejia's two errors led to the defeat.

Rancho Cucamonga scored first in the bottom of the third inning. After Ariel Sandoval tripled to lead things off, Dian Toscano blooped a single to left field to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead.

Lake Elsinore tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Kodie Tidwell led off by reaching on Mejia's error at shortstop. After Ty France singled, Michael Gettys laid down a sac bunt to put runners at second and third with no out. The next hitter, Josh Naylor, hit a sacrifice fly to score Tidwell to knot up the ballgame.

The Storm grabbed the lead in the fifth inning. A.J. Kennedy singled with one out, and advanced to second base after Quakes starter Felipe Gonzalez uncorked a wild pitch. Two batters later, Luis Urias singled to left field, scoring Kennedy and giving Lake Elsinore a 2-1 lead.

Rancho got a run back in the bottom of the seventh. LA Dodgers 2016 1st round pick, Will Smith, lined a solo home run to left field, his second of the season, to even up the game at 2-2.

Mejia's second error of the night (his team-leading 36th of the season), proved to be costly in the ninth inning. Naylor led off with a single and Franmil Reyes singled to put runners at first and second with nobody out. After Fernando Perez's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third, Quakes reliever Rob Rogers induced a ground ball to Mejia that he handled cleanly to record the second out, holding the runners. The next hitter, Edwin Moreno, hit a routine ground ball to Mejia, who fielded it cleanly, but threw wide of the first base bag to allow Naylor and Reyes to score, and give the Storm a 4-2 lead.

Phil Matson struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season.

Jerry Keel (2-0) earned the win for the Storm in his second Cal League start. He pitched eight innings, and allowed just two runs (one earned), on three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

Rob Rogers (0-1) took the loss for Rancho Cucamonga, after he allowed two unearned runs in the ninth. Gonzalez went the first five innings for the Quakes, and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. Kevin Brown pitched three scoreless innings in relief.
