San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - The Giants received an excellent seven-inning start from Jordan Johnson and took advantage of a High Desert error to claim a 3-1 series-opening win over the Mavericks on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. A dropped pop up on the High Desert infield with two outs in the bottom of the seventh scored two San Jose runs to break a 1-1 tie helping the Giants (59-56) to the victory.

Johnson (8-8) surrendered just three hits and one run during his seven-inning masterpiece to earn the win. The right-hander, who matched his longest start of the season, walked two and struck out seven.

Miguel Gomez (1-for-4, HR, RBI) smacked a solo home run and Daniel Carbonell (3-for-3, 2B, SB) had three hits as part of a perfect night at the plate to lead San Jose offensively.

With the game tied 1-1, the decisive seventh-inning rally began when Mavericks reliever Cole Wiper issued a one-out walk to T.J. Bennett. Carbonell then ripped a double into the right center field gap to put runners at second and third. Wiper recovered to retire Ronnie Jebavy on a groundout to shortstop for the second out bringing Rando Moreno to the plate. Moreno hit a high pop up in front of home plate and along the first base line. With three High Desert players converging on the pop up, ultimately the pitcher Wiper made a lunging attempt, but saw the ball bounce off of his glove and roll into foul territory. Wiper was charged with an error on the play as both Bennett and Carbonell scored to give the Giants a 3-1 lead.

D.J. Snelten (1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) relieved Johnson to begin the top of the eighth and quickly set down the first two batters of the inning. Scott Heineman then doubled before Dylan Moore beat out a slow roller up the third base line for an infield hit. However with the potential go-ahead run at the plate, Snelten retired Luke Tendler on a grounder back to the mound ending the threat.

Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) then worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to collect his ninth save of the season. Moronta finished the game with consecutive strikeouts of David Lyon and Jairo Beras.

Wiper (7-4) was saddled with the loss after yielding the two runs in the bottom of the seventh - his only inning of work out of the bullpen. The two runs were both unearned.

High Desert threatened early against Johnson putting runners at second and third with none out in the top of the first, but failing to score. Heineman was hit by a pitch to start the game before Moore doubled into the right field corner. Johnson though struck out Tendler, retired Jose Trevino on a groundout and struck out Lyon to escape.

Johnson then used a double play to pitch around a one-out walk in the top of the second. In the third, Jebavy made a pair of spectacular diving catches in center field to help Johnson through a scoreless inning.

The Mavericks finally broke through in the top of the fourth when Tendler led off with a solo home run to right. The homer, Tendler's 18th of the season, gave High Desert a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the Giants managed one single in each of the first four innings against Mavericks starter Collin Wiles, but were unable to push across any runs. Finally in the bottom of the fifth, Gomez connected for an opposite-field solo homer to left tying the game 1-1. The home run was Gomez's third since joining San Jose.

With the score tied, Johnson returned to the mound in the sixth and struck out one batter in a scoreless inning. He then struck out the side in a perfect top of the seventh to set the stage for the Giants' go-ahead rally in the bottom of the frame.

Wiles pitched six innings for High Desert and was charged with one run on seven hits. He walked none and struck out five.

Notes - * The Giants improved to 2-3 on their homestand. * Johnson has won his last two starts (2.77 ERA). Tuesday marked the third time this season that he completed the seventh inning (first since June 13). * San Jose out-hit High Desert 9-5. The Giants won despite going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. * Carbonell extended his hitting streak to six games. He's batting .458 (11-for-24) during the streak. * Tuesday was the Mavericks' first game in San Jose this season. High Desert had been the only team in the California League to have not yet played at Municipal Stadium this year. * Aramis Garcia (facial fracture) was activated off the disabled list before the game. The catcher went 1-for-4 with a single on Tuesday - his first game with San Jose since May 22. Pitcher Jose Morel was placed on the disabled list.

On Deck: The Giants and Mavericks continue their three-game series on Wednesday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 7:00 PM. Jose Reyes (3-3, 4.17 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while High Desert is expected to counter with Brett Martin (0-0, --- ERA).
