Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ) - Vidal Nuno pitched four shutout innings in his Double-A debut and the Trenton Thunder bullpen held off a late rally by the Akron Aeros to earn a 3-2 win in front of 5,082 fans Tuesday night at Waterfront Park. Nuno, who allowed only two hits and worked around four walks, left the game after reaching his pitch count limit with a 3-0 lead.

Cody Johnson went 2-for-3 to extend his team-season-long hitting streak to 11 games. His sacrifice fly in the first inning against Akron starter Paolo Espino (0-1) put Trenton ahead 1-0. Nuno made that lead hold up until the bottom of the fourth, when the Thunder rallied for two more tallies.

David Adams led off against Espino with a walk and Johnson then singled to put runners on first and second. Luke Murton lined an RBI double to left on which Adams scored from second, but Johnson was thrown out at the plate on a relay from shortstop Juan Diaz. Murton advanced to third on the throw to the plate and then scored when Kevin Mahoney hit a sacrifice fly to right.

Francisco Rondon (3-0) pitched a scoreless fifth inning to earn the victory. Preston Claiborne allowed one run in two innings of relief, while Lee Hyde gave up a run in the eighth inning. Ryan Flannery retired the final two batters on strike outs to record his sixth save in seven chances this season.

The Thunder and Aeros will play game three of the four-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 pm, with right-hander Mikey O'Brien (1-0) slated to make his Waterfront Park debut for the Thunder and be opposed by Aeros' lefty T.J. House (2-1). Limited tickets are available by contacting the Thunder box office at 609-394-3300 or online at www.trentonthunder.com.
