Plagman Cycles for the Win

Erie SeaWolves News Release

The Erie SeaWolves' offense has been almost absent over the four game losing streak the team was stuck in before their second game against Reading. After breaking out of this slump early, Erie couldn't celebrate until Tony Plagman's historic walk-off capped off an 8-7 Howler win.

The SeaWolves took advantage of an off night from Trevor May, the top prospect in the Philadelphia farm system. The right-hander gave up three straight hits to start the game, allow Jamie Johnson to double and moved to third on a Niuman Romero double. Johnson came home on a Ben Guez single to open the floodgates.

Rawley Bishop's one out double scored Romero to make it 2-0. Brandon Douglas walked with two outs to load the bases for Tony Plagman who hit his second grand slam of the season to extend the SeaWolves' lead to six runs.

May continued to struggle into the second as Ben Guez hit a solo shot in his second at bat of the game. May would finish the inning before being pulled out in favor of former starter Michael Sisco.

On the other side, Jared Wesson no hit the R-Phils through three innings before Reading started to chip away at the lead. One run came in the fourth off a Sebastian Valle double while another three were scored in the sixth, Wesson's final inning of work.

The wheels came off the SeaWolves' wagon in the seventh when Jared Gayhart struggled with his control. The bases were loaded off two walks and a single and Gayhart only managed one out. Rob Brantly tried to catch the speedy Troy Hanzawa with a quick throw to third, but the throw was too low and bounced into left field. Hanzawa and Tyson Gilles would score to put Reading behind by just one. Miguel Abreu would drive in Darin Ruf on a single to tie the game at seven apiece.

Zack Samuels would come in to get Erie out of the jam in the seventh and eighth while Reading's Frank Gailey matched the innings for Reading. In the top of the ninth, Samuels continued his dominance, striking out three. Juan Morillo came in and shut out Erie in the eighth, but the ninth was a different story.

Rawley Bishop drilled a double off the back wall to start the rally in the first at bat in the bottom half of the ninth. Rob Brantly's deep shot to left-center allowed Bishop to move over to third before Brandon Douglas struck out to set the plate for Tony Plagman. Only needing a single for the cycle, Plagman hammered a ball just over Leandro Castro's glove at the wall to walk off for the 'Wolves.

The win snapped Erie's four game losing streak and Plagman's cycle was the first for Erie since July 14, 2008 when current Seattle Mariner Casper Wells achieved the feat.
