Game #43 - Tuesday, May 22, 2012

New Britain Stadium - New Britain, CT - 6:35 PM

LAST GAME: The B-Mets sat through a one hour, fourteen minute rain delay before falling to the New Britain Rock Cats by a 10-7 score last night at New Britain Stadium. The Rock Cats tagged B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon for seven runs (five earned) on eight hits over 4.2 innings and added three runs against reliever Armando Rodriguez. Binghamton scratched out just one run against Rock Cats starter Steve Hirschfeld. Trailing by eight in the ninth, the B-Mets scored five runs against reliever Daniel Turpen, highlighted by a two-run homer from Raul Reyes, but the comeback fell three runs short.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Collin McHugh (4-2, 2.05) takes the mound for his team-leading ninth start of the season and second against the New Britain Rock Cats. The righty matched a career-high with seven shutout innings in his last start against the Trenton Thunder on May 16. McHugh struck out six and walked one while allowing seven hits in the no-decision. McHugh has gone at least seven innings in each of his last three starts. He allowed one run on six hits over seven innings against the Rock Cats on May 9.

LHP Logan Darnell (4-2, 5.27) makes his ninth start of the season and first against the B-Mets in 2012. The southpaw collected his fourth win in his previous start versus the Fisher Cats on May 16. He allowed three runs on five hits and matched a season-high with eight strike outs over six innings of work. Selected in the sixth round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Kentucky, Darnell began his pro career with the Elizabethton Twins (R) the year he was drafted. He started 2011 with the Beloit Snappers (Low-A) before being promoted to the Fort Myers Miracle (High-A) in mid-May. He finished the season by making five starts for the Rock Cats.

OFFENSE ROLLING: The B-Mets pounded out 12 hits in a losing effort last night. It was their third straight game collecting ten hits or more, the first time they have done that this season. Over their last three games, the B-Mets have hit .339 (38-for-112) and raised their team batting average by 10 percentage points to .263.

LATE CHARGE FALLS SHORT: Last night was the second time this season the B-Mets have scored five runs in the ninth inning. Binghamton pounded the New Hampshire Fisher Cats bullpen for five runs in the final frame in a 9-2 win on May 10. Binghamton is now 0-19 when trailing after eight innings.

FOUR-HIT DAY: B-Mets outfielder Raul Reyes completed a four-hit day with a mammoth two-run home run to right field last night against reliever Daniel Turpen. He joins Josh Rodriguez as the only B-Mets to collect four hits in one game in 2012. Reyes has now racked up three-straight multiple hit games, raising his batting average 87 percentage points from .163 to .250.

SNAPPING THE WINNING STREAK: Last night's loss snapped Binghamton's two-game winning stretch. The B-Mets have only had one winning streak longer than two games, a four-game streak from April 19-22.

HE KEEPS GOING: Matt den Dekker extended his hitting streak to a league-best 16 games with a double in the third inning.

NEARLY A FULL SEASON: Pitcher Collin McHugh has made 24 starts with the Binghamton Mets since his promotion in late May 2011. In that span, he has gone 12-4 with a 2.60 ERA. The righty has collected 142 strikeouts in 141.2 Double-A innings.

LOOKING FOR REVENGE: Rock Cats starter Logan Darnell went 1-1 with a 5.58 in five starts after a late season promotion to the Rocks Cats in 2011. The Binghamton Mets tagged him for seven runs on ten hits over 5.2 innings in his second Double-A start on August 18, 2011.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their four-game set against the Rock Cats with an early 12:05 PM game tomorrow afternoon. RHP Zack Wheeler takes the mound against RHP David Bromberg.
