Lake County Captains News Release

(Eastlake, OH)--Josh Noviskey hit a three-run homer in the first inning Tuesday afternoon, and Jeff Stevens earned his second straight win on the mound as the Captains defeated the Hagerstown Suns 9-4 at Classic Park.

The Captains (7-6) and Suns (5-7) have split the first two games of the series. The rubber match of the series and finale of the homestand is Wednesday morning at 11:05. Prior to the game, the team will honor former Captains manager and current Indians coach Luis Rivera.

After the Suns took a 2-0 lead on a pair of first-inning solo homers by Armand Gaerlan and Nick Evans, the Captains came back with four in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good.

Jason Denham led off the first with a double off Waner Mateo (0-2). Johnny Drennen drove Denham home with a single. Chris Gimenez was hit by a pitch to put runner on first and second for Noviskey.

Noviskey, who had not homered since June 14th against Lexington, then belted a 2-0 pitch over the right field wall to make it 4-2. It was Noviskey's seventh of the season and his third against Suns pitching.

Noviskey added an RBI single in the third to make it 5-2. After a run in the fourth made it 6-2, the Captains strung together three straight RBI singles in the fifth from P.J. Hiser, Marshall Szabo and Nick Petrucci to make it 9-2.

Stevens (2-1) settled down to work five innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, with two walks and a strikeout. With the Captains up 6-2 in the fifth, Stevens worked out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the fifth by getting a 1-2-3 double-play ball off the bat of Jose Castro and a fielder's choice groudout by Jonel Pacheco.

The Suns pulled to within 9-4 on a homer by Jesus Gamero and a sacrifice fly by Matt Anderson. Then in the ninth the Suns loaded the bases with two outs against Dustin Roddy. Nick Evans, who hit a ninth inning grand slam at Hagerstown to help beat the Captains on April 25th, grounded out sharply to third to end the game.

Following Wednesday's game, the Captains will travel to Delmarva for a weekend series. The team will return to Classic Park for an eight-game homestand beginning July 11th. For tickets, call 440-954-WINS.
