Catfish hold off RiverDogs, 7-6

Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (7-6) used timely hitting and fought off the pesky Charleston RiverDogs (6-7) to win 7-6 Tuesday at Golden Park. The ‘Fish collected 10 hits and went 6-for-14 with runners in scoring position. With a balanced attack the seven runs were scored by seven different Columbus players. The Catfish have won six of the last eight games.

The Catfish took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when RF Sergio Pedroza drove in DH Adam Godwin with a double. Pedroza leads the SAL with 67 RBI. Charleston took a 2-1 lead with individual runs in the second and fourth innings, but Columbus regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. 2B Travis Denker tied the game with a one-run single and CF Bridger Hunt added two more with a two-out single.

The RiverDogs climbed back to within one with a run in the fifth inning. The Catfish responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning with another RBI single by Denker that made the score 5-3. Columbus extended the lead to 7-3 in the sixth inning with a two-run single by SS Ivan DeJesus.

Charleston challenged the Catfish bullpen late. RHP John Meloan allowed a season-high two runs in the eighth inning but struck out four in 1 1/3 innings of work. RHP Ramon Troncoso entered in the ninth inning to protect an 8-6 lead. After a walk and a single to lead off the inning, Troncoso induced a double play, though a run scored on the play. He retired the final batter on a ground out to earn his eighth save. Troncoso has caused six double plays in 13 2/3 innings with Columbus.

Starter RHP Mario Alvarez (5-6) lasted 6 2/3 innings and gave up three runs to get the win. He allowed four hits and two walks. Alvarez is 3-1 with a 3.49 ERA against Charleston this season.

1B Jason Mooneyham went 1-for-3 with a run and a walk. He has reached base in 28 straight games and in each of 22 home games with the Catfish.
