GREENVILLE SHUTS OUT HOPPERS 5-0
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three Greenville pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout and the Drive pinned a 5-0 loss on the Greensboro Grasshoppers Tuesday night.
A crowd of 10,260 - the biggest ever at First Horizon Park - watched the holiday game.
The Drive struck early against Hoppers starter Sean West, scoring three times in the second inning. Tony Granadillo's triple scored one run, Chris Turner's sacrifice fly scored a second and Pedro Vasquez hit his first homer of the season to top things off.
Luis Soto doubled in a run in the third to stretch the lead to 4-0 and accounted for the final run with a solo homer, his second this year, in the fifth.
Michael Bowden (5-4) earned the win for Greenville with five scoreless innings, giving up three hits. Chris Jones and Blake Maxwell followed with two shutout innings each.
West (3-3) surrendered seven hits, five of them for extra bases, in six innings. Mauro Zarate and Travis Talbott combined for three shutout innings in relief.
Soto, Granadillo, Zak Farkes and Mitch Stachowsky had two hits apiece for the Drive. Gary Roche had a double for the Hoppers' only extra-base hit.
The teams continue their four-game series Wednesday at 7 p.m.
