Clinton LumberKings News Release
Peoria, IL - Zach Phillips and the Clinton LumberKings pitching staff had no answer for the hot bats of Peoria as the Chiefs' 2-3-4 hitters combined to go 8-for-13 in a lopsided 11-2 victory Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field. Phillips allowed runs in three of his four innings of work as the Chiefs built an early lead that they would not relinquish.
Chiefs first baseman Ryan Norwood provided more than enough offense, plating a run in the first with an RBI single and adding a huge 3-run blast in the eighth as part of back-to-back homers to ice the game. Norwood's seventh homer of the year traveled over the net in left field and onto the street outside the ballpark. Center-fielder Yusuf Carter added a solo homer to go back-to-back with Norwood off L-Kings reliever Gerry Oakes.
Phillips (L, 2-5) went just four innings in the game, allowing five runs on eight hits. A duo of LumberKings relievers couldn't stop the scoring, however, as J.B. Diaz allowed a pair of runs in the seventh and Oakes surrendered four more in the next inning.
Peoria starter Scott Taylor pitched a gem, limiting the LumberKings to just one run on five hits through seven complete innings. The lone run came in his final inning of work and was unearned to him. Clinton added a run in the ninth off reliever Scott Koerber as catcher Brian Valichka belted a two-out homer to left field, but could not draw any closer.
Four players for the Chiefs finished with multi-hit afternoons as both Norwood and Mark Reed ended up with three each. Valichka was the standout at the plate for the LumberKings, posting a 2-for-3 day.
With the loss, the LumberKings (21-42) have now lost six consecutive games on the road. They continue the series tomorrow night against Peoria, game time set for 7:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
