Matt Spring and John Matulia Placed on Hudson Valley Roster

Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release


Battle Creek, MI-The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays announce that catcher Matt Spring and centerfielder John Matulia have been placed on the Hudson Valley Renegades roster. Hudson Valley is the short season Class A New York-Penn League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Spring played in 48 games for the Rays and was batting .205 with 4 home runs and 13 RBI. Matulia was hitting .196 with 12 RBI in 55 games played.

Taking their places on the roster are Colt Simmons and Jackson Brennan. Simmons comes to Southwest Michigan from Visalia in the Class A advanced California League. In 13 games played with the Oaks, Simmons batted .275 with one home run and 11 RBI. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in the 33rd round of the 2002 draft and played rookie ball in Princeton during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. In 2004 he was moved up to Class A Charleston and played last year for Visalia.

Jackson Brennan is being moved up from extended spring training in St. Petersburg. Brennan played college ball for Gonzaga, where as a senior he led his team in runs, doubles, triples, and home runs. He finished his collegiate career by being named a third team Academic All-American. He recently signed with Tampa Bay as a non-drafted free agent.
