Marathon effort comes up short
June 11, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
On an unseasonably cool June afternoon, the Kernels and Wizards decided to play some bonus baseball. Trouble is, neither team really knew how long they wanted to play. The Kernels (28-36) came up just short as they fall to Fort Wayne, 7-6 in 15 innings.
Wizards catcher Brandon Gottier hit his first home run of the season onto the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion to give the Wizards the 7-6 win.
The Kernels battled back from an early 6-3 deficit to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth with the key blows being a Brett Martinez solo home run and a Dallas Morris 2 RBI double.
Morris went 2-6 with 3 RBI in Sunday's marathon and Martinez homered for the second time in the past three games.
Kernels starter Robert Mosebach benefited early from a Kernel 2 run first inning. Prior to today, Mosebach had pitched nearly 29 consecutive innings without any runs from the Kernel offense. But Roberts was lifted after only four innings, allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned) and did not figure in the final decision.
It was up to the Kernel bullpen and relievers Rafael Cruz, Brad Beck and Tim Mattison combined for nine innings of one run relief. Tim Didjurgis (0-4) was the tough-luck loser taking the loss after two innings of relief.
Nathan Staggs (1-1) got the win and John Madden picked up his fifth save in relief for the Wizards (29-32).
Game three of this four game set is tomorrow night at Veterans Memorial Stadium as it will be Mix 96.5 FM Dollar Dog Monday. Get here when the gates open at 6 pm as regular hot dogs are just a buck all night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm.
