WEST HAVEN, CT - The North Shore Spirit staked starter RHP Matthew Bishop (5-2) to a three-run first inning lead and never looked back, defeating the New Haven County Cutters 7-4, Tuesday night, in the first of a three-game series at Historic Yale Field.
Bishop entered the game with the Can-Am League's top ERA (0.91) and allowed one earned run on eight hits in 5.1 innings to take the win.
Cutters' starter LHP Brian Brainer (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 5.0 innings.
Spirit 2B Gary Roche and RF Carlos Rodriguez each drove in three runs in the game.
Cutters' 1B Chris Gaskin went 4-for-5 and DH Henri Stanley belted a solo home run (3) in the loss.
Game two of the three-game series is set for Wednesday night. Game time is 7:05 pm.
LHP Ryan Bonesio (2-4, 4.82) will take the hill for the Cutters and be countered by Spirit RHP Ryan Bicondoa (3-1, 2.97 ERA).
