Sanford Mainers News Release
Sanford - The Sanford Mainers saw their four game win streak come to an end on Friday night at Goodall Park at the hands of an offensive explosion by the North Adams Steeplecats. Despite the highest scoring game early in the season for the Mainers, North Adams managed to plate 12 runs in two-out situations over the final six innings to snap their three game skid and become the only Northern Division team to take home a victory on the night.
After the Steeplecats put up one run in the top of the 1st, the Mainers immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning as after a leadoff double by Carmine Pagano (McLeansville, N.C./UNC-Asheville) and a couple of walks loaded the bases, Jonathan White (Lawrenceville, Ga./Presbyterian) brought everybody home with a double down the left field line to put the Moose up 3-1. The very next hitter, Nick Howie (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Eastern Kentucky), would bring home White on a two out single and push Sanford's lead up to 4-1.
North Adams was able to get one back in the top of the 2nd but still found themselves trailing by two heading into the bottom of the 3rd as starting pitcher Tyler Mortenson (Woodlands, TX/U.S. Air Force Academy) picked up the only one, two, three inning the Mainers would be able to get all night in the top of the inning.
Sanford would add two more in the bottom of the 3rd as an RBI single from Shane Marshall (Webster, N.Y./Binghamton) scored Tyler Solomon (Haymarket, Va./Vanderbilt) who led off the inning with a triple and White hit a sacrifice fly that scored Marshall, giving the third basemen his fourth RBI of the game and the Mainers a 6-2 lead.
The back and forth, see-saw affair continued in the top of the 4th as the Steeplecats were able to plate two more and cut the Mainers' lead to 6-4. As would be expected in this type of game, the Mainers would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout by Jake Alu (Hamilton, N.J./Boston College) that brought home Brad Czerniejewski (Lake Forest, Illinois/Texas Christian University).
That is where the hot offensive night would switch hands though as the Mainers were held scoreless over the next four innings while North Adams was able to take advantage of some good at bats and strong two-strike, two-out hitting as they brought home 12 runs over the next five innings to jump on top for good. An uncharacteristic night to say the very least for a Mainers bullpen that has been one of the best in the NECBL through their first seven games.
Although it was not the way that the Mainers wanted their three game home stand to start, Sanford will have a chance to bounce back on Saturday night at Goodall as they play host to the Winnipesaukee Muskrats at 6:35. You can catch all the action on the NECBL Broadcast Network and, as always, head over to www.sanfordmainers.com to keep up with all the latest on the Moose.
