
Schooners Use 9th Inning Rally to Walk off on Vermont, 6-5

GROTON, CT - Down to their last out, the Mystic Schooners were able to string together three hits and walk off on the Mountaineers Friday night at the Shipyard in Groton, CT.
After the first two batters of the 9th were retired, Connor Moriarty (West Springfield, MA/ UConn) ripped a double into left center to keep the inning alive. He came in to score when the next batter Nano Santorelli (Yonkers, NY/ Seton Hall) singled up the middle. Santorelli then stole second, and came around to score on Freddy Sabido's (Staten Island, NY/ Wagner) walk off single to left field.
The Schooners started the game quickly, as Santorelli went deep to start the bottom of the 1st. Following a Brett Rodriguez (Queensbury, NY/ Wofford), he came around to score on a passed ball.
Vermont answered back with a run in the 2nd and 3rd inning to tie the ballgame. In the top of the 4th, they struck for two more to take a 5-3 lead. Nolan Tressler (Statesboro, GA/ Georgia Southern) reached on a two out single and stole second base. Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) then put a ball in play to second that went under the glove of Moriarty, scoring Tressler. Kelley then came around to score on a double by Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, FL/ Eckerd).
Vermont starter Brian Herrmann (Northport, NY/ Stony Brook) pitched five strong innings for the Mountaineers, striking out seven while giving up two earned runs. Tyler Arella (East Northport, NY/ Villanova) came in in relief, and promptly gave up a solo homerun. He settled in afterwards, pitching well until Moriarty's double in the ninth.
Mystic got five quality innings from their starter Bret Clarke (Limerock, PA/ Stony Brook). He threw five innings, giving up two earned runs while also striking out seven. The win went to Thomas Girard (Simsbury, CT/ Duke), who came in relief of Clarke. He pitched the last four innings, striking out seven on only one hit.
Vermont (2-6) is right back in action Saturday, as they host Upper Valley (5-2) at Recreation Field in Montpelier. The Mountaineers sit four games back of first place Valley, and Upper Valley is only a half a game behind. ).
