SwampBats Drop Second Consecutive Game Against Gulls

Keene Swamp Bats News Release


NEWPORT, R.I. - The Keene SwampBats drop to 3-5 on the 2018 season with a loss to the Newport Gulls by a score of 7-4. SwampBats' Ian Exposito, the starting pitcher, made his NECBL tonight against Newport, going two innings giving up five earned runs. An RBI single from Gulls third baseman Kody Hoese opened the scoring in the bottom the first, making the score 1-0. Newport would then score four runs in the bottom of the second inning, increasing the lead to 5-0.

Keene shortstop Erick Delgado left the game in the bottom of the second with an apparent injury, after diving for a groundball up the middle of the infield. Rightfielder Joe Breaux (Alabama), put the SwampBats on the board in the top of the third inning on a fielder's choice, making the score 5-1. That would be all the scoring until the top of the sixth inning, when 'Bats designated hitter Shamir Morales hit a single to centerfield, scoring Brandon Smith, making the score 5-2. Newport would counter with two runs in the bottom of the sixth after a base hit from Gulls second baseman Jack Gethings, increasing the lead to 7-2.

Keene first baseman Brandon Smith (Dayton) crushed a towering fly ball over the left field fence at Cardines Field, making the score 7-4. The 'Bats had a chance to get back in the game in the top of the 9th inning as Buddy Dewaine singled (Central Connecticut State) Mitchell Golden walked (Georgia Southern). However, three straight groundouts ended the game, giving Keene their fifth loss of the season. Jeff Praml was excellent in relief, striking out seven of nine batters faced over three innings.

First Responder Night will highlight the SwampBats next game on Saturday, June 16th versus the North Adams SteepleCats at Alumni Field. First pitch is at 6:30, and you can listen to the game on 104.1 FM AM 1220 Fox Sports Keene and necbl.com. Fans in attendance will get a visit from Smokey Bear and the BearCat. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display by Atlas Fireworks.
