Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-22) ninth inning rally came up short in a 6-4 loss to the St. Paul Saints (19-18) on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium.

The first inning featured scoring from both sides. In the top of the inning, Tim Hutting walked and Cody Haerther hit his second home run of the season to give the Canaries an early 2-0 lead. The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning. With two on and two out, Jacob Butler doubled to score Josh Alley and Jason Cooper, tying the game, 2-2.

It was more of the same in the second inning. The Canaries loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the frame. Joe Anthonsen hit a groundball up the middle that was misplayed by Steve Butler. Trevor Lawhorn scored on the play to give the Canaries a 3-2 advantage. That was the only run the Canaries would get out of their bases-loaded chance, and it was quickly answered in the bottom of the second. Andrew Schmiesing tripled to lead-off the inning, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Scott Knazek to once again knot the score, 3-3.

The 3-3 tie was broken in the fifth inning. With two outs, Cooper walked and Jacob Butler followed with a double to bring home Cooper and give St. Paul a 4-3 lead. The Saints would add two more runs the following inning, in building a 6-3 lead over the Canaries.

In the ninth inning, Tim Hutting doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Canaries were 0-for-7 on the night with a runner on third base before Beau Torbert hit an infield single to score Hutting from third and get the Canaries within two, 6-4. After Torbert stole second, Trevor Lawhorn reached on Steve Butler's second error of the game. The misplay put the tying runs on first and third for Patrick Reilly. Reilly hit a long fly ball, that was caught at the warning track in left-centerfield to end the ballgame, with the Birds two runs short, 6-4

Jino Gonzalez (3-6) gave up six runs on nine hits in six inning to suffer his second loss against St. Paul in three starts this season. Reed Dickert (4-4) struck out four in three innings of relief to get the win. Ryan Ariail retired Reilly to record his fourth save of the season.

The Canaries and Saints conclude the three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds come back to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night to host the Wichita Wingnuts at 7:05 p.m. Friday's game will feature "Post-Game Fireworks" by Sanford Health.
