Wichita Wingnuts News Release
Wichita, KS- The Wingnuts exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning and never looked back, en route to a 16-3 victory over the Sioux City Explorers on Wednesday at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
Wichita got on the board in the second inning, picking up a run on a Michael Sharp RBI single. In the fourth, Brenan Herrera knocked in two runs to put Wichita up 3-0. After an RBI single by Nick Blasi, Dustan Mohr blasted a grand slam off the scoreboard in left center to put the Wingnuts up 8-0.
Things got interesting in the fifth when Wichita starter Derek Blacksher brushed back Derek Schermerhorn. Schermerhorn walked towards the mound causing the benches to clear. Order was restored after about five minutes and two batters later Boomer Berry launched a three-run home run to put the Explorers on the board.
The Wingnuts added two runs in the fifth and then piled on six more in the eighth, thanks in part to Greg Porter's 18th home run of the season - a three-run shot - which tied him with teammate Kelly Hunt for the league lead. Blacksher pitched five innings to move his record to a league-best 11-2. Every Wingnuts starter recorded at least one hit and one run. Nick Blasi led the 'Nuts with three hits. After the game players gathered together again down the third base line, but cooler heads prevailed.
Wichita and Sioux City will conclude their series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets call the Wingnuts office at (316) 264-4625.
